Hey guys I am very new to Nitro Rc Trucks and I got my first truck (Traxxas Stampede) 2 days ago with the Pro.15 engine. I saw the pull start optional accessory and I was wondering: Which do you guys prefer and why? which is the better option, the pull start or the EZ-Start?

Zach

I prefer a pullstart with a seperate glow ignitor. It takes off extra weight and wiring plus you won't have to carry the starter wand around with you.

so do you go through more glow plugs with a pull start or the same. Sorry for being such a newb these are probably dumb questions. also with the separate glow plug ignitor is that a buy one ignitor and its good forever?

There are no dumb questions here, we all had to start somewhere. Glow plug use will be the same whether it's a pullstart or ez-start. You can get a battery powered glow ignitor in aa, c or d sizes, you just need batteries. I use an aa size, it fits in my pocket along with my small blade screwdriver and temp guage. No running back to my house or car when she quits or needs tuning.:D

well where I plug my glow plug ignitor in now is in a 4 prong little box mounted on top of the battery cover in the rear. What I was assuming was the pull start eliminated that whole battery setup getting rid of all that weight on the rear. there is a blue wire coming out of that box attaching to the glow plug which I'm assuming is the equivalent to a spark plug cable. Which in that case I'm assuming you always have to have that blue cable connected. So i guess what I'm wondering is.... What parts does the pull start eliminate.. and where would the new glow plug ignitor go in?

It will replace all of the ezstart and all of the wiring for it can come off. The glow starter will just clamp on the the glow plug and light it. I just installed one on my revo and love it. No more waiting for my starter wand to charge.

Yes you take the glow plug igniter off once it starts, with either set up you will have to carry something (ez start wand or glow plug igniter) both need to be charged (some ingniters use batterys still would need to have close by) IMHO the only thing you save on is weight. It would probly cost $40.00 to switch to pullstart and only to save weight. The only real benifit I see is you will allways know how much compression your engine has from pulling it by hand. With all that said I am probly going to switch to pullstart in the near future.

How can you tell with the pull? I know with the EZ -start the motor light on the ignitor wont glow if its flooded

just wondering.. would this void my warranty?

Idk about the warranty. I wouldn't think so. And when its flooded it will get harder to pull. You can really feel the engine better. I'm a total newbie also but I'm learning also and read a lot on the forum. You are at the right place to learn.

Thanks guys yea I think I am going to switch over because it looks like it will remove a ton of weight which in theory should make it faster. I appreciate all the help!

Put a roto start on it. When a pullstart breaks, your done bashing unless you have a spare. They always seem to break at the time you want to run the most...The Traxxas pullstarts are pretty reliable when used properly though. Rotostart is so much easier and you still get the benefit of less weight, with no blisters!!!

good advice Scrogg ;)...

i dont trust the pull start ..when it brakes , your done until you fix it or change it ....i love my ez-start ,, i had a couple problems with it at first ...but its all fixed now and works like a charm :D..it had a gear that was to tight inside and it would make the starter work overtime ..it just took a bit of grinding and its better than new ;)....
if you remove your ez-start ...go with the rotostart instead of the pullstart

and the ez-start wand has a belt clip ..so i dont see wy people complain about carrying it around

thats just my 2 cents ..lol

I mean the EZ start isnt bad.. but I was thinking without it the cart would be alot lighter= less stress on the rear shocks, wouldnt have to charge the ez start wand since you can sue a glow plug ignitor with AA batteries. Also yea I would get the traxxas pullstart.

Just looked into the roto start, looks interesting I will talk with the local hobby shop guy and get some more opinions. Like I said the plus to the pullstart is I would no longer have to charge anything!

It varies in style by engine, but the concept is the same across the board. Basically you start with what is essentially a cordless screwdriver on roids. A cordless drill works too.

An advantage over the ez-start is that it's light, probably as light as a pull start, and doesn't carry the weight of a motor to turn the engine.

Zach,
You've asked one of those questions that pops up from time to time here and there are several "right" opinions.
Some people love the EZ-Start, while others have reasons that they prefer the pullstart, and others prefer the Roto-Start.
It just depends on what works best for you.

I'm with Scrogg and in the Roto-Start camp.
Recharging batteries isn't an issue for me - everything has rechargeable batteries - the vehicles, the glo-plug ignitor, and the Roto-Start wand.

Whether you go the Roto or pullstart route, get a glo-plug ignitor with a meter. It'll greatly reduce the chances of flooding your engine since you'll know right away whether or not the glo plug (or ignitor's juice) is up to the task.

So even if I get the rotostart I will still need to purchase a glow plug ignitor correct?

hmm well I think I may try the pullstart and if i have issues I'll go to the roto start. I have 3 hobby shops within 10 minutes of me so getting a roto start would be no issue.
