Hi guys

I have a Kyosho Inferno 1/8 Buggy. The engine runs really well and cool until the body goes on and then the temp just gets too high (even running fat and rich) - there just isn't enough cooling head exposed to the airflow. Can someone give me some pointers on how to cut extra airholes into the body? I'm not too concerned about aesthetics, more the health of my engine....

Sounds like a problem with the engine.
You shouldn't have to hack the body to get the engine running at a sensible temperature.
How are you measuring the temperature?
Which engine are you running and are you racing or just bashing?
Buggy engines are not designed to run WOT for long periods of time.
 
Hi -

I'm measuring temperature with a digital MIP micro on-board temp gauge ( not as accurate as a gun I've been told). I'm running an STS .28 mill. I'm a basher, I don't race it competitively. I do tend to enjoy bashing on grass fields where there is heaps of room to get speed up for ramps etc so I do run it for fairly long periods WOT (maybe this is the true source of the problem?).

I'm pretty careful to keep it rich as my friend siezed his a while back while we were bashing, even tho I warned him! :)

It just seems to run so much cooler with proper airflow. For example, if it is idling, the temp will rise slowly but steadily to approx 260 deg F, however if I run it with no body (on smooth surfaces for tuning) it will fall as low as 180-190 deg F consistently. Thats why I was thinking perhaps it just isn't getting enough airflow across the head fins. What do you think?
 
It will idle hot do to no airflow to the cooling fins and the temps you stated are not out of line .You might try to turn the idle down and richen the bottem end a little . Post a picture of your body if you can and I will show you where to put the cooling holes
 
260F is not outrageous, especially given the amount of WOT running that you are doing. 190F is not hot enough though, conventional wisdom says that you need to be above 200F or the cylinder sleeve won't expand fully and you will wear out the piston/sleeve set prematurely.

DaHellion has extensive wind tunnel experience, take him up on his offer of help. Trim a little off the body at a time to get the temperature down to something more acceptable to you (consider 220 - 240 to be a safe range).
 
If it's a buggy, it should already have a sizable hole in direct line with the cooling head in order to get to the fuel tank. It should not need any other holes.
 
If your running in grass for extended periods of time at WOT, 260 is an acceptable temp. If you were running on a track or dirt, it would be running cooler since there wouldn't be so much drag from the grass.

You could also try gearing down a bit so the engine doesn't have to work so hard if you spend most of your time in grass.
 
Hey guys,

Thanks a lot for your advice. I've attached a picture of my body - its just a standard buggy shell. Not a very high res picture, but you get the idea. If you need a shot from a differnt angle, let me know.

I've geared it pretty long - 16 tooth clutchbell and 44 tooth spur as I just love the top end. When I'm using it on a track, I usually swap the gearing over to 13 and 46.

I'd really like to know how I can some more flow through the body so I can relax a little more about it. I'm okay with 260, but would feel a lot better if I could get it down to the 220-240 range.

Nice car

Hard to see is the front windshield cut at all? A shot of the left front (car facing you) and one under the car would help. I will do stuff like this (see pic)when I am running a new or massaged engine to keep it cool .It's not really a good idea for on road because of the surface air. off road should be fine doing this. but if you race check your rules first .Also getting air to your exhaust pipe helps too . Some times bodies will circulate air inside and the pipe will act like a oven .Try to line any front holes with the rear so the air can escape. Hope this makes sence cause I'm half a sleep:hehe: LOL I'm always telling people to take there time cutting bodies. This one looks like I spent a good 5 minutes on

if your only bashing you might want to put some hole in the front windshield after you first try all the other suggestions the guys have given you. A five hole pattern shouldwork well just make sure not to make them so big that they weaken the body.
 
Try bringing that clutch bell down to 14t for bashing. Leave the spur at 46. Thats still a little too much but, it will work.
