Engine Wont start

Hey, I just got this nitro truck in a trade. I have not sent off my truck yet, because i want to make sure the truck he sent me runs. But i can't get it to start up...

I am not sure if the glow plug is bad. But when i put the glow plug igintor in the motor the motor does get warm. I am not sure if it not starting cause the glow plug..

But it wont start up for nothing. What are some advice/tips i should do to get it started? Because I'm really about to send him his truck back because it wont fire up

Change the glow plug, make sure the fuel system is sealed and that fuel is getting to the carb. Make sure the ignitor is fully charged. Try opening the carb a bit with the throttle trim once you know the plugs good and that your getting fuel.

Okay.
I will try a new glow plug.

Because the ignitor is charged completely and i put in fresh fuel.
If the glow plug still glows red alittle does that mean the glow plug is fine? Because i can feel the motor heating up when i put the ignitor on the glow plug.

make sure that you prime the motor aswell,hold your finger over the stinger and pull it a couple times or blow in it till you see the fuel go into the carb,crack the plug after you prime it and give it a pulll to see if you have fuel spritzin out a lil,should fire right up and cook the plug for a second or two before tryin to start

I got a new glow plug for it. I put it in and i put my finger on the stinger to prime it. And still no luck. I even removed the motor and made sure i got all the fuel out. I just can't get it to fire up for nothing. It has a fresh glow plug but wont fire up.

It is a XTM X-Cellerator
I think it is a .12 or .18 not sure

I thought it was going to fire up at one point but it didnt

It seems to be an .18 in that truck. I found the manual but it only gives the setting for the HSN which should be set 3 turns out from closed, not sure about the lsn. Make sure the HSN is right and try again.

I just tried that out and still nothing..
I know gas is getting to the motor though.

If the plug is glowing....and fuel is getting into the engine....the only thing really left is your idle gap and your tune. Pull off the air filter...how big of a gap in the carb slide do you see? It should be @ the thickness of a credit card (give or take).

Here are some questions for you:

1. What does it sound like when you try to start it? Does it sound like it wants to start...or not really making any noise?

2. If you spin the flywheel by hand with the glow plug installed, do you feel any resistance at all if you make it go a full turn?

3. Have you played with the HSN and LSN at all yet? If so...did you lean them or richen them?

4. Have you tried to go back to stock settings on the carb? Usually a good rule of thumb is flush with the housing on the HSN, and flush to the housing on the LSN sometimes works....depends on the engine really.

5. You said you primed it....but did you see fuel make it's way from the tank to the carb at all? How long did you prime it? Have you tried blowing into the return line to force fuel to the carb?

Yes it is getting gas to the carb. And yes the idle slit is about the size of a Credit carb. Maybe alittle wider but not much. I know it is getting gas to the carb because i see it going in when i prime it.

I think the motor may be flooded because when i pulled it sometimes will squirt out fuel around the bottom of the head. I try to unflood it by taking off the head and pull the string slowly.

It sounded like it wanted to start one time. It made a poping sound like it was flooded out. But it didnt not start just did that once.

Yes i feel compression when i have the glow plug in the motor and spin the motor.

Yes i played with the high needle and Low needle setting. I have the high needle 2 1/2 turns out and the low needle 2 turns out.

Factory settings

I could not really find the true factory settings and i look threw the manuals online but could not really find the true factory settings for it.

Yes when i primed it i did it for about 2 pulls and did it slowly. I never blew on the return line though.

If fuel is leaking out from under the head either the head bolts are loose or the head shim or shims are bad. When a nitro engine floods it hydro locks making it near imposable to pull the pull start. to clear a flooded engine just remove the glow plug turn the engine over and pull on it a few times install the glow plug and try again.


If this is your first time with nitro you might want to take it to a hobby shop and let them try, a lot of times it's something very simple but if you don't know what to look for or do it will break your spirit.

Wait there suppose to be a gasket under the head? Because if there is there is not one on mines.
So most likely it is not flooded then because the cord did not lockup.

Yeah i will probably take it to my local hobby shop but i really hate to because i think one charges 30 buxs just to look at it. But i thin Hobby town usa is free..

I will probably just tell the guy to send me money to mail him back his truck because this is some crap! My electric runs perfectly fine i am not trying to put money into something that was suppose to be RTR

Yeah....fuel is not supposed to be leaking out of the head at all. lol That would be BAD. I would send it back to him for sure.....or get him on the phone and have him help you get it fired up. There is no gasket per se, but there is typically 1-2 shims under the head button (or just the head if there is no button). The head button typically goes into the sleeve and seals itself for the most part, unless it's the wrong head on there.

Yeah there is a head button, and that seals when i put it in.

I think the motor might be shot because when i got it the motor head was painted! And that right there is a big mistake because it will cause overheating. So i am thinking the motor might be shot.

Sounds like there is no glowing of the glow plug.....have you tried a new one....or a new ignitor at all? Sounds like it has compression to start though....of course sounds can be deceiving ;-)

Have you tried a fresh battery in your ignitor? That style ignitor can drain a battery pretty quick.
