I am new to Nitro RC racing and am looking to compete in my local championship. I am running a Losi 8ight 2.0 RTR for when it starts. I'm wondering if i was considering an engine/exhaust upgrade what would be the best option. Hopefully some of you more experienced folk can advise me. This is my first race car so I'm still learning as I go along. Cheers

Ned

If I was you since you are new to nitro, just break in the engine you have if you haven't already and learn how to control and work it before trying to upgrade. You can compete in a lower class just until you have the feel of your car. Also you can figure out the best setup for it starting from bottom up, not the other way around.

Cheers Zyhac. I'm wanting to learn so i guess take it easy is best policy. Lots of forums i have looked at have said that even thought its an rtr i should take the engine apart to check for air leeks. Whats your view on this?

I wouldn't take it apart especially not knowing anything about it. If it is leaking you will know when you turn it on or try to turn it on. Just try to break in the engine and see how it works. Don't try to tune it or anything just yet and once it is broken in completely you will start to learn the steady sound it makes and should be able to tune it just right and for the liking.

+1, and read read read on tuning etc. Don't break it in when it's cold outside and never make big needle adjustments.

.....Then get an lrp zr 30x. The stock ht pipe is quite nice already.

When you say cold what temp are we talking? i live in ireland its about 10 degrees at the moment?

celcius

If i wanted to get a little bit more speed without engine change is there any other mods i could do to improve this??

That still may be a bit on the cool side to break in a nitro. I would hold off until at least 16 degrees celsius. For faster speeds you can either add teeth to the clutch bell or drop teeth on the spur gear.

I agree. Also I would not worry about the speed right now. You don't know how you will be able to handle it once the engine is broken in, but if its that important to you yes you can change the gears and make sure its fine tuned.

Having an 8ight B and T I would say playing around with the suspension to make it a little softer is a good start with lighter weight oil for faster response. With the exception of the OS .21 in both they are stock and perform quite admirably. The steering response and stickyness to the track is just unbelievable!! Your gonna love that truck!!

I have a trophy that I have been bashing with and thought i would see buy the losi 8ight as a good starter for some racing. I wanna see how i get on before i consider building a race roller but it just learning how ropes and how to improve. The guys at the club I'm racing at seem very helpful so its gonna be fun. Is the OS engine a worthwhile step up ?
