:thumbdown :thumbdown Just purchased a brand new hpi Savage X and tried to get it going.
Filled it up with the correct fuel, glow plug and starter work fine, but when I put the rotostart in after priming it, the engine locks when the piston reaches the top of the cylinder. I thought it was flooded but took the glow plug out and turned the engine over but not much fuel came out. Put the plug back in, went for a second attempt but it locked straight away. Repeated the process but keeps on locking (weird). Seems to turn over ok without the glow plug in.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

You are experiencing a common problem. Just be patient when going through this. Do a search on Nitro Break In. Lots to help you out.

Thanks.
Why does it keep locking when the piston reaches the top of the cylinder though, if its not flooded.

it sticks becaues its new and the sleeve is a tight fit. try warming up the engine with a hair dryer to expand the metal a little. like jon2 stated do a search for the break in procedure. this tip and many others are in there.

welcome to RCNT!!

Thanks for your help.

Will try warming it a bit then.

It may still be hydro-locking as well. Take the plug out and flip the entire rig upside down (or at least on it's side), then hit it with the rotostart. That should flush the fuel out.

When you are priming it, you want to do so until you see fuel just about enter the carb, then attach the glow heater and start it.

If you are running the HPI 4.1 on it, hydro-locking is common until it gets broken in.

You can also try and back the GP out about 1/4-1/2 turn. This will relieve some of the compression for starting. Then tighten it back up when running. I've had to do that on some of my larger engines. My axial 28 and OS 18TM had that issue. Both were pull starts, but were really tough for the first few tanks of break-in.

Since I break-in at a local park, I don't have AC available, so I can't plug anything in to warm them up. The best I can do is throw them on the floor of my 1:1 car and blast the heat for 10 minutes or so. That normally gets the head up to about 90 degrees or so.

I did as olds said when I was breaking in my K4.6. I loosened the plug about 1/4 turn to ease the compression just a little. Then once it got running I just tightened it up again. After a couple tanks, it will start much easier.

Thanks guys, got it running now. Its just really tight, seems to have loosened up a bit now i have run a couple of tanks through.

Can't wait till its run in!
