Right i finally got the savage running but the STS d30m is getting very hot very fast. after 5 mins running i burnt myself on the head and it was reading over 300F on the PE-1 Temp Gun. thats after 5 mins. one of the cooling fins melted straight into my skin it was that hot. What temp should it run at? its the RB Mods RACE TUNED - STS D30M. What can i do to cool it down?
Thank You

you gato richin it up, thats way too hot. 220-240 is good. go back to the stock settings and start over. make sure you do small 1/16 turns. you should also get a nice blue stream of smoke when your "on it"..

I'm scared ill damage it now. I might take it to the shop and ask them to tune it. would have liked to do it myself but i dont really know what I'm doing.

Has it been broken in? The D30 and D28's had a really tight pinch when new and had a tendency to run hot for a gallon. Granted, 300F sounds a bit over the mark, but from what I read about them, 270F was almost normal until the sleeve loosened up a bit.

its had like half a gallon of 25% through it. Some problems with it are:
  • It needs full throttle to start and it still struggles. Takes 5+ tries with rotostart.
  • When i hit brake it stalls.
  • Bogs before full throttle when it does run.
Temp is my main concern shooting up to 300f+ in 5 mins.

Thanks. ill have a read through them sites in the morning and try sort something out. Dont really want to take it to the shop because they will say somthing like "ARE YOU AN IDIOT? YOU LIKE DESTROYING ENGINES DO YOU? TRY NOT RUNNING IT SO LEAN NEXT TIME IDIOT!!! that will be 25 pounds please sir." Nah theres a shop pretty close by thats ok they wont make me feel like an idiot if i take it to them... i dont think they will anyway :\
Thanks for the help so far.

If it hit 300F you ruined it already, sorry to say. The sleeve is really thin and warps easily on the .30s. Don't feel bad, I did the same thing to my RB Mods .30, it was untuneable as well. Don't waste another dime on fuel or plugs for that engine.

Once I overheated it one time it ran like poo everytime afterwards. I called Rick Brake, he told me about the thin sleeve problem. You can't have them repinched later on when they loose compression either. You may get it tuned, you may not. That's just how it turned out for me. Hopefully you'll be luckier than I was.

Well... I'd at least try. I've run engines up to 300F due to something like an air leak or carb needle changing on it's own due to vibration/old o-rings and it was still fine for many gallons.

I would take the engine out and clean it! Don't want to start doing anything to the engine with any dirt on it.Once the engine is cleaned cover up the carb opening before removing from case. You will need tome High Temp RTV Silicone. I prefer red or blue.

You will need to take the backplate off ( four screws ) and the carb ( this will be a pinch bolt and nut). You will want to make sure that the carb and the backplate are super clean and dry. You will apply a very thin line of silicone to the carb neck, you basically cover up the o-ring but not smother it. Remember little will go a LONG way. I like to use a zip tie tail to smooth it. Do the same for the backplate. Just apply enough to where the backplate will mate with the crank case.

After LEAVE IT ALONE FOR 24 hours. I may be to picky here but a good seal must be made here.

Some will say to tightened down before or after the silicone has dried. I have tried both and don't see any significance. What I do is after applying it mount them both back on snug on the crankcase and just tighten a bit and let it sit. After a full curing period.. tighten down and reinstall in the truck.

Do a search as there may be other ways telling this to make it easier to understand....

Well ill take it to the shop and let them look at it see if its dead and if it is ill get a new engine if its repairable they can repair it and if its ok ill take it away and run it in all over again.
Thanks

First thing you should try is leak checking the carb. Really easy. First remove the carb.
Next install a piece of fuel tube to the fuel inlet. Fill a sink up with water. Put your finger over the carb intake where the air filter goes, and your thumb over the carb neck hole. Make sure you have it air tight.
Dunk the carb in the sink and blow thru the fuel tubing. If you see air bubbles coming from anywhere, that is a problem. Fix the leaks and retry the engine from break-in settings.
Pull the engine head off and see if fuel has been coming out of the head button/block area. This is where mine leaked bad. The top of the block was always wet. If this happens to be the case, the engine is a lemon. Send it back to RB Mods.
Tuning these engines can be tricky. If the engine overheats while you are just idling the engine and doing easy break-in driving, richen the LSN until the temps drop to an acceptable range. These engines require more adjustment to the LSN than they do the HSN.

A lot of people over compensate a fat low needle with a lean high needle.

This exactly what it sounds like to me.

I realized I had one of my engines tuned like that and I didn't know it, except mine wasn't running hot. It never saw a lot of top end either because of the area I always ran it ,so the lean high end setting really was never very apparent in the temps. Well, lets just say it didn't get a whole lot of life before a pinch.

Getting that hot in such a short time means that your LSN is set too lean.
Start with the engine cool, and richen it up about 1/8 turn. Start it and just let it idle. If it gets too hot just idling, you need to richen it a bit more.

c',mon guys dont make the man feel bad..!!! dont worry its not ruined. I've done it alot. bUT it worked many gallons after!!

Not trying to make him feel bad, jst telling him the truth. Most engines can tolerate being run lean for a bit. THe STS .30 and 5 port .28 cannot. The sleeve is so thin it warps easily.I hate it just as much he does, I went through the same thing. I hope it works out for him, but i highly doubt it. The STS .30 is a bitch to tune in stock form, mod it and it gets worse, not better.
