Hi everyone, what's up ?

I want to buy a new engine for my savage, and I have two engines in mind.

the NITRO STAR K4.6 engine or the wasp.28

Which one of the engines I can drop into a savage le without changing any other parts on the truck ?

And how well do they pack a punch ?

I will be bashing and racing, more to the bashing side.

\\

thanks

Take a look at the Picco .27 (green or copper head).
I know it's not one of your choices, but a good choice.

I'll second that vote for the picco .27. It is easy to tune and has more than enough power to pull 47/18 gearing on your Savage. It is also fairly inexpensive at around $150.

I've been running these for a long time.
I highly recommend either of the two.

I've got a Wasp .28 in my Savage and have been very, very happy with it's performance. Holds a tune and starts reliably. My brother has the K 4.6 and other than a few issues with the pull start mechanism, mill has run problem free!

Also I've heard alot of good things about the Sh .28. Might be another option.

I second that i have the XTM version of the sh.28, it really hauls. As for the wasp .28 i had some major problems with the engine. It would never hold tune and would not idle. no matter what i did it never ran right. Thats not to say it won't run well for u. In the end its ur choice though. That was just my experience.

so you guys are saying that, all the engines I have listed and they ones you guys suggested. I don't have to make any other ajustments to the savage and take stuff off the old engine and slap it on the new one ?

Basically, yes.

anything .21 and up you shouldnt have to do any mods. (As long as its a slide carb). Basically a drop in and go.

I built a Savage together for a co-worker and we decided on the SH 28 for his mill. It has been a pain in the azz to break in, this is the most trouble I have ever had. The K 4.6 on the other hand was a piece of cake to break in and tune, half gallon through it and still on the original glow plug

Alot of times the only thing u have to change over from the stock engine is the roto start back plate/oneway. I have never owned one but i do believe u have to purchase a different back plate for the K 4.6 to use the rotostart. When i had my wasp .28 it was direct fit back plate from the NS .25. it only took a little messing around to get the plate to bolt up. it is much better then PS. As for the rest of the truck there are usally nothing that needs to be alterd any big block can be bolted in. THE main problem is usaully the rotostart area.
hope that helps

What problems did you have breaking it in? I know its a pain on the hands because the compression is so high, but I broke in 2 and did not have any problems whatsoever. They started and ran with no problems. Both have 3+ gallons now and running strong.

The glow plug issue is just a luck thing, some plugs blow out in 2 tanks, I've run over a gallon and a half on an engine before.

It's not necessary but you might want to upgrade the driveline to handle the extra power, at least get the 4 gear diffs.

Well I already have the 4 gear diff, also. How would these engines run 10%, do you think I would be doing more harm than good to them ?

I think you should up the percentage, no matter what mill you run, but that's just my opinion. It'll help lengthen the engine life, but it's your call entirely.

i think most mills are rated for 20 to 30% nitro fuels. it would run on 10% but not to its full power.

Just normal break in problems but much much worst than any other engine I have done, and yes it's killing my hands. I'm going to start trying to tune it this afternoon, hopefully that will go better than the break in.
