i need a decent radio not too much $$ that is capable of handling steering, throttle and reverse. (savage X)

Spektrum DX3e is less than $100 will do what you need.

Sub-question - what is involved in adding reverse to an existing chassis? I take it you need a whole new servo, but what else is required?

A 'drop in' reverse module with linkages. It already has a spot inside the stock transmission.

However just fair warning...it will substantially weaken the transmission when you install the reverse module. I have killed s few of them until I just gave up on them. I always shell out the output drive one them.
