I've been thinking, maybe I should get an electric on-road car.

How can you tell if it's a good trade? If the batteries and engine are good?

How long do these cars hold a charge?

it can depend on many factors like mah rating of the pack, number of cells quality of the pack and how old it is

what kind of electic car you looking at? (edit) but i would say you should get like 8 - 10 mins

well what you can do is stock up on like 4 -6 cheapie 6 cell packs and a 15 min charger that would give you almost unlimited run time

I run a 1/12 onroad. Heats last for 8 mins and I have no problem lasting the full 8 minutes on a 4 cell. You just have to remember, batteries can't be skimped on. Look at the run time #'s, IR #'s (lower is better) and the #'s (ie. 1.18 is the number to shoot for). I use Fusion packs and I last the entire 8 minutes without dumping or going soft. After the race is done, I will start to dump after the 9th minute.

1/12 is a very competative class as well. I run the CRC T-Fource. Smaller, lighter and cheaper than the touring cars. It's the added equipment that will get ya. (Soldering iron, tire truer because the tires NEED to be cut, Charger of competition grade for the batteries you get, equalizer tray/discharger) You're looking at about $600+ in added equipment, depending on brand. But the kit is cheaper and also is pretty much bullet proof. You will break anything if hit hard enough but not as bad as a touring car.

It's a simple design made for racing.

if i read his posts right i think he is just going to be runing in parking lots and back yards with his kids in fact i dont think rc dad has run ANY rc car yet? and just figuring out what he will enjoy

if this is the case i dont think he need to worry about all the pro type racing stuff ..imo all he would need is some cheapie batterys and a quick charger....and if you like it you can buy the premeum stuff as you feel you need it

but diver raised a great queston what scale and type touring electric are you looking for?

I was thinking for getting an electric car. I have three nitro's now. I just thought the batteries on these professional cars would last longer for some reason.

if you get a brushless set up and dont gear it for top speed i THINK you can get like 20 - 25 mins with a 3300 mah battery..... at least thats what i hear

True, and you don't have to clean the engine out at the end of the day.

An average qualifiyer, even for nitros, will last 5 minutes. The mains will go for at least 10 minutes to as high as 45 min+. It all depends on the race and track. An average tank of gas will run for 6-7 mins (till bone dry), during the mains, refuels are a must at the 5 min mark. Same amount of run time when you really count the minutes.

Don't get me wrong, I love nitro's. That's where my heart is but electrics can move too. Where I race, the "Open Mod" touring classes WILL outrun the nitro's in every aspect. THese guys play with gearing, rollout, brush/spring combo's ... it's almost an exact science. A calculator is part of their toolbox requirement.

Don't count them out. Electric will teach drivers to be more precise in throttle as well as steering control. Makes you a better Nitro driver. Your skills will be honed to be a more precise driver. I have only been doing it for a little over a month and I surprised myself. I love it!

Nice posts guys, I'm about to buy a rusty to play around with, along with my Tmaxx, the rustler has the novak super rooster reversible and several battery packs including a few 6,7,8 and one 9 pack. It has three engines, the one installed is a Pyrite 10 turn Double wind Speed Gem motor with package. I don't know what any of this means since I've only owned nitro, but it sounds pretty good. Any comments on what I'm getting into???? good or bad.

If you are planning to run electric outdoors you are going to have a lot of fun there is so many tricks to electric a simple brush change, timing, motor turns, etc will give you differnt types of speed I've seen electric cars doing top speeds of 81mph it's sick but fun to watch the little pieces flying thru the air when it crashes :)
