Hi all,

I'm hoping this is more than yet another noob nitro temp question so here goes...

I've borrowed my cousins worn-out T-Maxx and installed a new OS .15 CR-RX. I've gone through the break-in procedure from the OS manual and am on about my 8th tank. I've been keeping the temp around 220F-240F when bashing but have noticed that the engine seems to really like to run better around the 280F range. With the mixture set to run around that temp, there's a nice trail of smoke from the exhaust and the engine sounds great. A little richer and the high-end seems to gurgle and the top speed seems to drops dramatically. Are these temps OK when bashing in 30F weather? Can I assume that a nice trail of smoke means I'm getting a right amount of lubrication?

I'm running 20% O'Donnell and using a Traxxas wired temp gauge around the bottom fin.

thanks,
david

It's hard to say what's the "optimum" temp to run an engine...if you're putting out steady blue exhaust smoke, and the engine doesn't cut out at top end, you should be good.
Another way, is to inspect the glow plug...if it's gray and ash-looking, you could be too lean.

OS actually states to tune for performance not temp. I am with russ on this, if you have a nice steady stream of blue smoke, and your not cutting out from a lean condition, you should be just fine.

like stated above tune fro perfrmance not temp unless its running 300+ cause latly here its been real cold like 10 degrees and iv retuned my mxx for perforamnce and the thing is running like in the 120-130 range but in the summer i also retune for performance and run round 270 so it doesn't always have to do with the temps

I put the OS 15 cv-r(x) on my maxx and it would overheat as well. 250-280. I don't like running that hot. I have the same engine on my xxx-nt and it rarely breaks 250 unless i'm really beating the piss out of it and driving through grass. On the xxx-nt it stays between 220-240 all the time.

I just don't think it has what it takes to pull a maxx around all day long. I ended up doing a 21 conversion on the maxx and use the OS 21 RG. The temps on that now range in the 220-240 range.

I use trinity monster hp 20% for both.
