i just got my hands on this new savage x............i was breaking it in & on my 4th tank i guess the spur got striped, now I'm too lazy to take it all apart so i can change the spur.. i would still have to go buy it down the street at my lhs, i did it once on my friends but he had the older savage 25. since i heard that the new savage x has easy access i was wondering if i should take the engine off or the screws on the side of the tranny? whats easier? also is it just my savage x or do they all have alot of play at the clutch bell? I'm gonna put some shims behind the flywheel to move it up some & some more after the clutch bell so it doesn't move back & forth too much, but just enough! that way it stays lines up & stays perfect.

I think the problem is in your gear mesh more than the play in your clutch bell, unless the shaft is showing excessive wear. When you put the new spur gear on, make sure to line up the gear mesh just right, and use loc-tite when putting everything back together to hold it in place.

The top of the trans case comes off with six screws (remove the "handle", and there's two on top of the case; three if it's a newer X). Then lift up on the top of the trans case. It should come right out.

thanks heartbrak that sounds quick & easy. i would of probably tried to pull the whole tranny out or engine. I'm gonna have to pop the engine out anyway so i can shim behind the flywheel thanks though this is my first savage.

No problem man. The savage looks like it'd be a nightmare to work on at first glance. HPI engineered a lot of "shortcuts" to make maintenance easy.

sure did. I'm on my fourth spur now... won't make it to a fifth. solid fkn steel my friend.

integy steel spurs are ***.

Really though v12, no need to shim... it all lines up perfect.

I agree, everything lines up perfect. Don't shim it or you'll knock something else out of whack. Take the engine out and you can change it in a couple minutes, make sure your gear mesh is as tight as a ducks ass in a power-dive (well not that tight) but it will help to make your spur last a little longer. But as Gordz says, eventually you will be putting a steel one on.

good luck
