I received my E/Z Run b.l. esc/motor combo today, and it seems to work great. Here's the situation. With 2.2 Mashers, 18-87 gearing and a 4200 8 cell, my motor temp gets up to around 120. Esc is around 100. It has killer acceleration and decent top end, but like always, I'm craving a bit more. How hot can a brushless motor safely get? I'd like to jump up a few teeth on the pinion and really let 'er fly. I have a heat sink I could mod to fit the motor. The battery pack stays nice and cool. Any info, tips or tricks would be awesome. It's a 3000kv motor. Esc is 35 amp with 190 burst. Thanks as always.

140 degrees F is the safe temp threshold for brushless motors.

Novak states 160-175 max, and most others I've seen at 160 max. I recommend 140 because every motor I own that has been run at 140 or less is still alive and kicking. I have delaminated 2 motors due to runs in the 160 range.

Castle is the only company that states 200 F or less. You want to test it out and be the guinea pig? :D

Got a quick question on the motor thingy here. The Velenion motor, it's not designed for long fast runs right? That would cause it to get hot, correct? If so, I have had my Velenion motor up to the 150 range for a short time. BTW, gearing is stock Slash.

Long run times are no problem for any brushless motor as long as you stay within safe operating temps.

Did you damage the VXL motor by hitting 150 degrees? Probably not. I still recommend that you keep temps under 140 for longevity.

I have a Castle 7700kva and it does not matter how I gear the *#$%$#$@#! thing my run times are limited by temp. I would suggest never getting that high of a KVA motor. But if you are only at 120 F with yours you should be good to go.

Ran it for about ten minutes today geared 25-87. Speed runs and general abuse(donuts, hard acceleration, ect...). Got up to 135. Esc was 95. It was about 80, muggy and calm outside. I'm pretty damned impressed so far with this ez run set up. I'll be real impressed if it last for any amount of time. I'm still awfully skeptical of it only costing $50.

i got a vendetta with a 8000kv motor and 2s lipo, took it out to the parking lot tonight and had some fun with it , it's really fast, but with the stock smallest pinion the vendetta was rated for the motor gets hot as hell. but it does have 1/10 onroad car wheels that are a bit bigger than the stock ones.

run it until it fries, replace it and dont run this one that hot. lol

i have an ezrun 4340 KV it gets HOT, but still seems to be doing just Fine.

With 23-87 gearing, I can bash in the grass and not get above 140. 25t pinion is a bit much, though it's fine on pavement. It doesn't have much more top end than the xl5/12t, but it has a TON more pep. As long as there's traction, there's wheelies. And the 10+ year old tranny didn't appreciate the power with a tight slipper. Hopefully the vxl tranny sittin' on the shelf will fix this. And a more forgiving slipper setup!
