new to the hobby noticed that there alot of battery choices , just wondering nimh 7.2v 3000 mah is probably the bottom of the barrel, i see that there also lipos , is there much of a difference between the two types if so should i be upgrading to the lipos

There is a major difference between nimh and lipos. You should only use the lipos if your vehicle is set up for it and you research the dos and donts of lipos.

Making the leap to Lipos requires a lipo charger, the lipos themselves of course, lipo charging bags, and your ESC and motor have to be able to handle lipos. The difference between them though is night and day. Lipos are far superior.
