here in the next year or so I'm thinking about buying a diesel pick up what are your thoughts on the LMM Duramax vs the 24V 5.9 Cummins? really it comes down to engine persormance cause I love the body style of the silverado that the lmm came in and I love the bodystyle of the 06-08 (roughly) 2500 ram.

The Cummins engine is better but the Duramax will be easier/cheaper most likely to pull HUGE amounts of power from with a simple tuner. But either are extremely good engines. Same with ALL of the powerstrokes, it just takes some knowledge on them to understand things you should do to them to make them bulletproof. Both tranny's take a bit of abuse but from 90% of what I've read and been told the duramax doesn't like much more that 150 extra hp worth of tuner. The dodge as a truck is a POS and really so is the GMC/chevies as far as quality of seats, interior things and so on. The paint comes off of everything in the cab real easy, its pretty lame if you ask me and the chevy/gmc seats tear/crack real easy too.
Both with a tuner, well with the right tuner can get crazy awesome mileage.
My buddy Joe has an 08 cummins, with a smarty stacked with a....can't remember but had them stacked and has the top speed topped off at 130. We were cruising at 130 in it and the gas mileage thing (even though its not had figured) was at 19!!!

The cummins has alot of stuff that should be gutted though emissions wise to make it run better. Not sure on the dmax though.

My Brother has a 2007 New Body Chevy, the seats in that truck are so comfy. the LLM has 365hp and 660lbs from 07-10 and the 11-12 has 396hp and 765lbs, the problem with the 2012 is the Diesel exhaust fulid you have to put in them....I think it comes down to personal preference.

I would Buy the DURAMAX, that is my next truck

the 24 valve 5.9 is superior to any duramax. All across the board

Agreed, and I'm a Chevy guy. The last I checked the HP / TQ king of the annual diesel dyno wars was a 24v Cummins. All the newer diesels are becoming choked down, and harder and harder to mod though.

I would have to go with the Cummins over the Duramax just because of the miles that they have run in semi trucks. Same thing with the "original" Power Stroke (a rebadged Navistar).

I have been planning on buying a diesel for a while and have always liked the 5.9 cummins just cause when it comes to MPG's stock truck for stock truck you can't beat it. This last weekend I got a chance to drive a 08 duramax and the power was very impressive. I have never drove a 5.9 but have rode in plenty and none (without being modified) has ever felt as powerfull as the duramax did. I will not be towing anything that a gas engine can't easily pull but being a born again redneck natrually I just want a diesel. I never have liked Ford so they are out of the question.

while cummins is probably the better motor I think GM makes the better truck

For sure. Thats why the cummins are so much cheaper than any other diesel on the market. Awesome awesome awesome engine, not a great truck though.

None of these trucks have a front end worth bragging about, they all wear out too quickly IMO, and the ford is the absolute worst. I've worked on all 3 and some needed over $1000 in parts before they ever reached 60,000 miles.

That being said, if you're shopping for an engine, get the cummins.
If you don't need 4wd, don't get it.

I'm in the process of trying to by an 07 dodge dually with the cummins engine, Not my fisrt diesel, i have always been a powerstroke man, but at the deal i think i can get this one at I'm gonna take the chance, it is an auto, with the engine brake, 180000 miles, i think i can get it for about 2500-3000 dollars, its been a work truck at my company, but serviced as it should have been. what do you hardcore diesel guys think, is it worth it, any horror stories i should know about?
