dual tank help please

I'm a newbbie to the hobbie so this may be a stupid question. Last week I got my savage and found this board and there is alot of talk about dual tank mod. Is the problem the stock tank is to big and about half empty the fuel pressure starts to go down and starves the motor of fuel? I assume the pressure for the tank comes from the small line from the exhast header pipe? Now does this second tank feed the carb. and the stock tank feeds the second tank so the second tank is always full and has even pressure? Is this what you guys are talking about or am I totaly off base? Does this make a differance in performance or more of an insurance thing? Which tank mod. do I buy? I tryed to make this easy to understand but maybe someone else can do a better job at expainning to me. Thanks for your time!!
 
well the dual tank mod is so you get consistant fuel settings throughout the entire tank of fuel and will help to prevent air in the lines when you are up side down. there is no kit for this you need to purchase all pieces seperate . i find the HAYES 2oz. tank works well ( easier to prime every time you start up for the day) then you will need fuel line also somewhere there is a pic of this mod maybe someone here will be kind enough to drop a link. you will need to make your own bracket
 
The fuel pressure diminishing at the half way mark for fuel level is common to all RC systems that share this design. A fuel pump would solve it easily enough, but those are hard to find and rather pricey when they are found.

I have not come across this dual tank mod, but the logics sounds right. I, too, am curious to see it.

Do you have a side shot?

Or can you describe the fuel tube routing...ie from pressure line to primary tank, primary tank to....

I have a pretty good idea of where to put the tubing, but since you have done the mod, your information would be better than my educated guess.
 
is it just me or are his tires on backwards in the back??? looks like the tread is facing the wrong way
 
they look on backwards.. hmmm wonder why...

ok fuel routing.. red from tank, black to engine..

has the clunk in the tank so it feeds fuel in any direction, the carb nipple needs to be level with the carb out..
 
Okay.

But your rear tires are on the wrong sides. Look at the tread pattern for only the rear tires. The "chevron" is pointing to the rear of the truck vice the front. The front tires are fine.

The reserve tank is just a stopover for the fuel on the way from the main tank to the engine. You rely on the pressure from the exhaust to push the fuel from the main tank, through that reservoir to the engine? Any problems yet? Are you dialed in rich or lean from factory? Just curious.
 
ok that pic is way old fyi... sav was 3 days old at that point, broke cooling fin, main tank and all on day 4 :banana:

the settings... tuned to perfection, keeps it from after warm to empty of main tank and een up to 3/4 empty on 2nd.... yes it is installed like a fuel filter, the main tank with truck not running, do this for priming the 2nd tank, main one fils it up with no pressure, day i broke the above i never knew i broke the main tank even, 2nd stayed full, the biggest issue is filling the 2nd tank....

what i do is pull off black hose, put red hose on, fill tank, put hoses back into proper place..... this only needs done 1st run of day if u keep filling main tank around empty....
 
Some say the tank looks stupid in the back where you can see it. I was thinking on maybe putting it under the roll bar out of sight. I know I would have to run the lines some other way but what do you think of this idea?
 
the black nipple in the middle of the tank needs to be level with teh carb nipple..
 
back to my whats the point question.... I never have anyproblems with my stock tank setup??? where are you guys driving.... outerspace??
 
LOL...everyone is a critic. This is one option for those who have problems with the self leaning tendancy of the fuel delivery system. It also helps with keeping the engine running when you get inverted for some reason. I guess the real question is...

Where are you running yours? If you haven't run into a time where you are racing to right your inverted Savage. you are probably not pushing it hard enough. If you haven't gotten frustrated with the tendancy for the engine to suddenly go squirrely because the fuel system is messing with your needle settings, then you probably have them set too rich and aren't seeing the maximum performance from your engine.

Regardless, if you are happy with the way your truck performs and have not found an instance where it is inverted....then you may not need this mod.

BTW...how is that Savage of yours running? Having fun with it? Made the right choice didn't you? I know I am and did.
 
Its great.. I just took her all apart and put her all back together again. seems to be running better. I'm really happy. So happy that I want more RC's
 
I've heard of this place and finally had a oppertunity to check it out.. it is open 7 days a week supposedly all year long, practice on the track is FREE.. yes FREE.. :lol: they even have lights for when it gets dark.. they race on sat after 3pm and sundays... did not ask price to race but i think it is 10$.. how easy is it to find.. its like 1hr from my house, off of sr11 down by the river..

name of teh place is Brown's Hobby Shop and Raceway, state route 213, Hammondsville, Oh... hmmm no zip on the card, but if you are in west pa/ohio region you go south on sr11, this becomes sr7 at one point, but at the sr7 south exit you hop off, go south to sr 213, like 10min from 11, and a mile and a half on the rights is the hobby shop, and down the very BUMPY driveway is the track..

i tested both the big joes and the road rage in the muddy track, the road rage won.. they perform so much better it was unreal.. well my F-150 body is also not pretty beat up.. wait for clean pics to see hwo bad.. NOTICE no more wing.. LOL.. u can also see i pulled the bolts out of the skid to the bumper, bent BOTH of the rear shock cross bolts, BENT the bracket to the duel tank mod, BUT to see the faces of the people saying he's fucken crazy, PRICELESS..

there is a hole in the back of the body from the duel tank mod.. the tank is 100% intact

The big Joe tires have alot more weight then the Road Rage tires. The Big Joe's also make the Savage just to wide which makes for wider turns. Try something like the bow ties or Sportmaxx tires on that track they will hook-up like crazy.

Regardless, sounds and looks like you had a blast. I'm surprised to hear that the Road Rage tires performed so well in muddy conditions. They are designed to be a dry/wet pavement/blacktop type tire. Glad to hear that they perform equally well on packed dirt or mud.
 
I'm not surprised at all.
On a Muddy clay track, the mud will stick to the road tires an load them up. The mud will stay inside the tire grooves. Nothing sticks better to wet track clay than clay. Just like glue on glue.

The big Joe's will throw mud and do a great job of cleaning them selves. Bare rubber slips on wet track surface. We run street tires or our warn out mulchers at the track for the first few races in the morning if they soak the track the night before.

The only issue is the weight of all that mud. It can easily add 3-4 lbs to the truck.
