msly, thew slipper is designed to slip and yes it could be called the weak point so to speak. I had the tx-18 in my old maxx and I used the plastic spur gears. Like I said my pefference is for the metal, but I have now gone to 21's. You will be just fine with a plastic spur. If you break one it will cost around $8-9 to fix it. You have already taken one of the best steps and removed the reverse. You may also want to consider mip or similar cvds. eBay's slipper price looks good.
