I'm in the 9th grade at a large school in a small town in Southern California. Unless you live in or near San Diego, you probably haven't heard of us so I won't even bother with the name of our town.
Anyway, there are a fair amount of boy-racers in this town, including a black 1990 240SX with a white body kit and an Accord with Z3 fenders. Among them was also a 1991 Mustang 5.0 with APC carbon-fiber look taillights. The guy who drove it was a junior, and he always seemed like kind of a punk to me, along with actually being "punk". I never really paid much attention to him other then muttering "pathetic..." when he would try to peel out of the parking lot(his heavy chrome wheels impaired his ability to lose traction). He was going out with a freshman that I have known since kindergarten. She used to be a huge b*tch but she matured and now I don't mind her much.
This morning my mom informed me that someone driving a black 1991 Mustang had been killed in a car accident. I was pretty sure it was him but I kinda hoped it wasn't someone who I see every day. I looked up his name in my brother's yearbook and sure enough, it was him. I don't know him but it was still shocking to learn who it was. After all, this was the person who parked in AutoShop a few feet away from my math class.
On the way to school, I saw the concrete well that he hit. It was several feet tall before and it was reduced to a pile of rocks. The car had long been taken away(the accident occured at 3:30 this morning). At school, I learned the specifics of the accident. There was no alcohol or any other controlled substance involved. He simply was driving too fast. The crash was near the end of a short sweeper about 15 feet off the road. The driver locked up and slid into the well on the passenger side. The force of it broke the driver's neck and killed him instantly. The passenger is still alive but unconscious, in the hospital. He doesn't know what happened to his best friend yet. He has either already had a leg amputated or will have the operation soon.
This just shows how quickly one life can end and another can be ruined. The driver was in no way impaired, but was driving too fast for the road conditions.
His girlfriend had been dropped off minutes before the accident occured. Amazingly, she was at school today, but obviously grief-stricken.
People, let this warn you. If you're one of the people on this board who is lucky enough to be blessed with the privilege of driving a car, be very careful. It can end just like that.

This thread reminds me why I love Volvo's so much. Some years ago my little bro and the neighbor kid decided to get really phucked up and go for a joy ride in my dads 740Turbo Volvo to find out the top speed of said car. The neighbor kid (a short dude) was driving and my bro was in the passanger seat. The guy driving must have been a buck-10 @ the most and my bro is no heavy dude himself. Between the two of them, they consumed a gallon of wine and a pint of Vodka in less then two hours. They where driving on a narrow road going an estimated 120 MPH. Apparenlty a sharp left turn came up and the inexperienced and very drunk driver tried to turn and the car started to roll VIOLENTLY. They rolled an estimated 26 times but the people on site said that 31 rolls would be a better estimate. They where rolling so hard and fast that they where rolling end over end.

My bro and his friend walked away with mere bruises and minor scratches. The driver is little and had he been a tall person he might have sustained some minor neck inuries as the left roof was obviously starting to give some. THis Volvo that still sits in my fathers junk yard is a mangled ball but the roof and the carb held up in a manner that would have protected any buckled passangers in the car. The airbag actually did more damage to the little phucker driving then anything else. Volvo will pay your family $1Mill if one of your buckled up loved ones dies in a Volvo regardless of the cirumstances of the wreck (They probably take exception to going into a lake or something). To this day, no one driving a Volvo during a buckled up wreck has been killed anywhere in the world.

Had both of these cars been driving a Volvo and buckled up(of course) I'd be willing to bet my life that they'd be alive to tell the story. 5.0 Mustangs have more weld points and steel then a little Honda death trap but not much more. I love my RX-7 but it's not a safe car and I drive to fast in it (who wouldn't with 400-544HP on tap?).

The passanger of that cars life probably hasn't been "ruined" but it will forver be changed. THe parents of the kid driving will have this chit on their concious for the rest of their lives. What a waste of life.

Thats a sad story NitroM3GTR and a waste of life. All the best to all over there.

Wow I am not too far from you and didn't hear about the crash. I hope all is well with those at a loss. I have been in situations where I have been so tempted to give in to the temptation to race again but the Lord blessed me with a very wonderful wife and son. They make me think twice. There a lot of drivers old and young that I see here that just want to show off. You can only make sure you are not in thier path of destruction. I hope that this loss makes you a stronger person. Learn from this loss and be safe when you are behind that wheel.

take care

Jon

I'm really glad I got out of that before I had an accident or caused one! My freinds and I would go out at night and street race constanly and just plain drive like assholes.Luckily none of us were ever hurt or caused any accidents. After the lose of both of my brothers I no longer have any urge to drive fast in a car. They were drinking and decided to go get more beer and never made it home. Now even when I'm in one of my freinds cars I will ask them to be more carefull and my loss has seemed to have an affect on my freinds as well as my driving.

nitrom3 iam glad you posted this.some times the younger genaration needs to here this kind of stuff.its harsh yes but if it makes you think about doing things like this it good to show what could happen to you when you do things like this.i know we have a lot of people in here of that age.all i can say to all of you is please think twice befor you go and do things like this.not only can you kill your self but innocent people to.

there are alot of people at my school like that. pull out of there parking on the street and are doing 50 in a 25 in seconds. many times they have just swept by me... pretty freeky. but, I'm also guilty of a heavy foot.. i just make sure i keep to the speed limit if i decide to floor it

I dotn see the point in street racing. Thats exactly why its illegal! they cause accidents!

I love Volvo's too, had a 240 GL turbo brick, I smashed that thing like a rally racer!!! Safe as hell.

I was lucky to survive my teen years and a 71 camaro, built 327/4 sp. But stupid is stupid, no matter what you are driving.

Thats sad that happened man. People get in any car with some "race" wanna be poop on there and think there a fiddlesticking D-1 drifter. I've been in to many cars of uncontrolled drivers and I can't say much as the turn I took in my MX-5 at 75moh but damn its a horrible thing.......

I know that I'm going to be a safer driver because of this, and it really showed me what one night of driving too fast can do. It's actually amazing that the damage was so bad considering they were both wearing their seatbelts.
-Update: I have learned that the passenger has a 50-50 chance of losing his left leg. All we can do is hope and pray that fate leans his way.

I was dumb in my teenage days with a 240SX SR20DETT. That was too fast for some one with a heavy foot. Luckily now I am more patient.!!

Thats a horrible story. As a father, I worry about the day when my oldest asks for the key's. This must be terrible on the families of these kid's.
I hope all goes well with the survivors of this terrible Accident.

Comon Jon2, it's not a SR20DETT! one T only....SR20DET!......I'm not sure what all the letters stand for but the skyline was RB26DETT(Race bred 2.6 displaced engine twin turbo) So I'm guess the SR20 is BLah BLah 2.0 Displaced engine turbo....BTW who done the swap and from what comapny did you buy the engine from? I'm thinking about one for graduation or soemthign

240sx...hummmm, that's a Nissan right? If I remember correct the various 240sx's that I drove in where some of the slowest sports cars I've ever driven. Yours must have been a Japspec mean machine. THey look pretty good to but the power was disapointing to say the least.

American 240s are garbage! or atleast the engine...I mean horrible....but you take a engne from a S13,S14,S15(Japanese version) and throw them in a american version and you have yourself a 2.0 Turbo Corvette killer!

That remembers me how stupid and lucky I'd been when I was younger.

this story reminds me of 2 very tragic accidents that have happened in the town i live in in the past year

Story 1
One of my brother good friends (also driving a mustange not sure what model) was on the way home at around 1:30 AM and i guess he lost control of his cars and hit one of the biggest trees in the town of Westport i mean this tree is HUGE we found out the next morning and there was crowds of friends and family around the tree leaving flowers plaques picture rippon and all sorts of things. This was about 6 months ago and the tree is like a mormorial for the kid theres all ribbons and plaques hung on it and people are still stopping by and adding things it was very shocking and sad.

Story 2
This story also happened to one of my bros old friends (dint chill much anymore) but it was her and 3 other people this happened in New Bedford MA. They were traveling too fast when someone cut them off so they lost control and crashed through a barrier on a bridge and plunged into the water the car was a junker. The doors in the rear would only open from the outside. 2 of the people were DOA and the other 2 survived for a few days in the hostpital but also did pass away.

um, actually, they probably wouldn't beat a corvette in the 1/4 unless you had an s15 motor in it, and even then i'd still bet on the vette.

And you know, 240's would get owned on a large road course by vettes...but then again, the vettes would get owned by 240's in autocross, so it really all depends on what kind of racing it is. But then again, if you did strictly just an engine swap, you'd probably get owned anywhere cuz i'll bet the 240 has some poop for stock suspension.

Personally, i'd take a Turbo Mr2 over an 240 with an S15...can't beat mid-engine technology.
