So I lastnight while messin around with my Losi i decided to tear apart the diff. (This was an Ebay truck afterall!). To my surprise, it had the RRP monster diff gear. I replaced the small ball bearings on the monster diff gear, and lubed them up with the white Losi diff grease. As I was puttin it back together, I put a small bit of grease on the gears to help them run smoother. Just somethin i've done in the past with my old XXX NT(years back). A buddy of mine said that it was a bad idea, and will eventually gunk up and cause the diff to be less a bit rougher. Well, I didn't replace the small balls on the outdrive (didnt' have any spare) - and this could be the cause of my problem. My diff still seems a little rough to me? The gears were all fine, none showed any signs of wear. Normaly I dont like to reuse old parts, but it wasn't really a complete rebuild of the diff. The diff DOES feel better than it did, so it accomplished somethin! The truck ran great today outfront.

Anyhow - I was just curious if anybody had some tips for my next diff-rebuild to create a silky-smooth diff! Maybe ditch the metal monster diff gear? Go back to the plastic? different lube?

Thanks!
Mike

*cough* team ass green slime. errr team associated.

+1 on this advice. Team Associated green slime is a wonder lube. I use it when rebuiding shocks. Love the stuff.

yeah it does work on everything. If they sold it in quantities of gallons. id buy it. i put it in just about anyhting that needs to be lubed up.

Are the diffs open on your Losi?????
Or are they sealed...
If there open I would not put grease in them...
I opt to use a dry lube...Like a fine graphite power..

With open diffs with grease in them attract dirt..Were as a dry lube does not.

I'd recommend the AE white lube (looks like sour milk chunks) on the larger diameter diff balls, with the black grease on the smaller diff balls in the out drive. On the gears themselves, as Zandor said, a light sprinkling of graphite powder is the way to go, altho I run mine dry.

Green Slime? Just looked it up on Tower 'Thick Density" - You use this to lube up balls? On the gears also or would it attract sand particles to build up in the gears? Graphite Powder sounds like a good idea - I was plannin on maybe pickin up some lithium grease next time.

Thanks guys!
Mike

If it's a truck like the XXXNT, you can run a bead of silicone grease around the case halves, where they join together. Kinda like a gasket of grease. Do the same anywhere an open part of the trans case is closed (like against the chassis, for example). That should be enough to seal it without worry.

tape will also work to seal up the diff case. actually they recoment the tape but I think the silicon would be the right way to go. either one is just fine. I just think they tape falls off easier than the silicone would (if it did.)
