Differential oil

Will differential oil give you longer gear life..... or is it just to give you different gear speeds.

it is used to tune your diffing action...heavier fluids will give more of a posi traction feel....

if your diffs are shimmed correctley then it doesn't matter what fluid you use wear and tear will be about the same, Like Plaid said diff oils are used to tune.

light on rear, heavy front and something a hair lighter than front for the mid?


Just thinking something light on the rear would help it slip instead of locking up. If it slips, it may help on turns I'm guessing. The front heavier would help it lock and better for turns and don't ask me about the gear box one lol I'm sure it all depends on what your racing in also but can't say either way.

Thats pretty much what I was thinking my self...I mean on the oil and not being totaly off...although we could be lol

An example: 5k front, 7k mid, and 1k rear. Thats pretty much what I've heard a few times about buggies, I was just taking a stabb at why they would want these weights for each area.

typical standard is 7-5-1,2 or 3k in rear...try different stuff and see what you prefer.....every buggy will react to the diff oil changes in it's own way.....
I've had good results w/ the 7-5-1 myself....2-3k in rear if the track is smoother....

In brands of buggies usually stick to a certain oil setup. If we knew what buggies you guys were trying to tune we could help more. With that being said, most buggies tend to run well with 5,7,1/2. SOme don't like that setup, so do.

Yeah Front Middle Rear. That's usually how it's shortened up.

Now I'm trying to understand this a little more.

Is the reason the rear end is lighter because you don't want the rear locking up as much making it harder on turning? I'm guessing if so you can adjust the weight to help out on looser tracks and vic vs on harder tracks. Also is the front the opisite, heavier oil would make it lock up and turn better? I got a guess on the mid but can't express it what I'm thinking ATM.

If you like a loose rear end make your rear diff oil higher, if you want a rear that tracks well go with a light oil.

Thats what I was thinking. I'm just looking for understanding instead of an answer as to what weights to use. That way I'm not spending my free time changing oils hoping for the right result Not that I race but I may need this info one day.

jon's first example will have a similar effect on making the ass swing BUT only because you will get the front to hook up harder and overpower the rear.....but you won't have the posi type acceleration you'd want.....

when he says loose rear I think VB is talking about how easy it will break traction.....
