difference between 4 spider mod and diff spool???

hi, I'm a bit of a newbie to the savage world! I'm just wondering if anybody has use the diff spools in they savage instead of having gears ( spider mod). i have the 4 spider mod in my savage and I'm using some high temp tamiya grease for gears. when i tip my sav on the side the wheels spin fast. the diff spool is meant to be for off road and hill climbing, and is supposed to stop the wheels spinning action???? was thinking about getting a couple as i really only use my sav for off road. so anybody used them or knows about them??? pics included.

The spool basically locks the diff. It makes the rear or front wheels (whichever diff you use the spook in) spin as if they were on a solid axle keeping the power going to both wheels the same regardless of any loss of traction to one or more wheels.

The spider mod just makes the differential more solid for handling loads of torque. The extra set of gears add strength to the assembly. You can accomplish the same action as a spool by using some really, really, really, really heavy grease in any differential set up.
 
The only problem I've had with normal greese is that it doesn't do what you think it would. It doesn't seem to keep the diff from unloading after a few minutes worth of running.

We had a server crash and had to revert to a back-up. End result was some posts got lost.

I installed the spool in the rear on my Savage for a while. It really does get the power to the ground but creates a terrible push causing turning to be a lot wider than before. I really realized this since running mostly on our track. It killed my turning radius bigtime. I have since switched back to the 4 spiders and 5000wt oil front/3000rear. This setup is working awesome for me. Still really hooks up through a turn but got rid of the nasty push I had.

About the grease, olds97 is right. Heavy grease isn't gonna do what you think it will. Even the 3000wt silicone oil slows the diffs more than the grease. All thats happening is that the gears are just cutting grooves through the grease and basically just being lubricated rather than constantly having the Oil around them slowing down the action of the gears.
If you are gonna be just bashing, the spool is pretty cool. You'll get some awesome twin rooster tails in the dirt and some wicked donuts, but if you're wanting tight and quick turning, fughettaboudit! :) Heres a pic of when I installed my spool...

Oh, one other thing is that when I removed the spool, the torque from it inside the diff case had eaten pretty bad grooves inside where the shaft rides in the slots. Just something to think about.
 
Okay...seems I am getting misinterpretted. I mean oil/silicone. I used 100,000wt silicone by AE and it basically acts like a diff lock. If you do this, you better like it that way because cleaning it out if you change your mind is like scooping cold molasses out of a shot glass with your fingers. It ain't easy.

Sorry, if the grease vice oil remark caused confusion.
 
LOL. Damn, I bet that is some thick stuff! Even just the 10,000 I put in my buggy centers is super thick! Yeah, i thought ya meant regular old auto type grease. Some people do believe that theres no way the silicone oil can be stiffer than grease though. I was thinking that myself until actually trying the stuff. Man what a difference it makes :)
 
i personaly think the spool would be good only for rock climbing hill climbing,not to good for racing as i think it put alot of tension on the drive train any kind of turns at higher speeds or on the throttle will pose tention on the drive line.i used to race a tube chassis manx buggy on the 1/4 mile and when i put a spool in the trans it was impossible to turn the tires would bind. i personaly wouldnt use them just my opinon
