For bashing on all types of surfaces what weights do you recomend for the xterminator diffs?

I have
30000
10000
3000
7000
1000

I was thinking 7k/10k/3k.

I ran 3,5,1 in my X-term pro and It worked very well. Kind of a bulky car to feel much of a difference but I could see a gain in performance.

I prefer thicker like 10K or 30K in the center. I have 50K and it handles kind of poopy, but I think I have stock grease in the front/rear diffs which doesn't help.

When bashing, getting good power to the rear tires makes for better bashing. Your less likely to get high centered on stuff. And, when you peg the throttle on loose stuff, all four tires go.

When I got my buggy, there was 7K in the center. It had a real tendency to unload the diff on the front under heavy accelleration which was kind of annoying. With the 50K in there, I have power on all 4 tires almost all the time. But I think I'd prefer something a little lighter like 30K.

I think I am going to play with that feature. I am going to pick up a variety of diff fluids. I want to try a high weight for the center diff. What is everyone seeing with a higher diff weight oil in the center? I have used the 7000 weight and 5000 in the center so I want to hear some opinions on who has played with it...

Yup, 3/5/1 for me as well. I've tried everything all the way up to 100,000 in the center diff. Personally, nothing works better than 3/5/1. You can experiment with some of those really thick/heavy weight oils just for the fun of it, but I think you'll find it will be difficult to control. It will ultimately come down to what suits you best. Good luck.

The original poster asked specifically about the XT pro and someone replied that 3/5/1 is a good combination for that buggy, but on a more general level it really depends on the design of your diffs and the amount of grip available on the type of surface that you are running on.

Diffs with 6 spider gears (I'm thinking Hyper 7 here) have less room inside the diff casing for the oil to slosh about so a lighter oil will probably work as well here as a heavier oil in more "roomy" 4-spider diffs.

As I understand it, the factory spec for the MBX-5 diffs is 3/3/1 with O-rings behind the spider gears in the front and center but the setup sheet for a recent winning MBX-5 driver in the UK championship showed that he was running 7/20/1 with no O-rings on a hard-packed dirt track with ProLine Crimefighter tyres.

Personally, I'm running 7/10/3 on grass tracks with long spiked tyres (Turbo Rats) but you have to bear in mind that a dry grass track probably has more grip than a dusty dirt or clay track.

Being a basher and the buggy I have is a MBX5, it has the 8 bevel gears. I am not out to race just yet but rather get a feel for the buggies capabilties with certain conditions. I like to have power at most any give time, going into a jump or out of it. There are other factors I know take play but I am taking it one step at a time. But thanks for the input!!

8 bevel gears in an MBX-5 diff? Are you sure? You wouldn't happen to know the Mugen Seiki part numbers for these diff parts would you? All that I can find are the following parts for the 6 gear diffs: -

C0222C - Cross shafts (2)
C0229 - Sun gears (2)
C0230 - Spider gears (4)
C0256 - Diff case

You know what I may have the Savage diff gear assembly. Hold on...

I apologize my mind is scrabmbled... Its only four. Sorry bout that. its only four like a savage as well. Regardless, the oil will be played with to find out what I like.

No problem. Good luck with your experiments. It's amazing how many times you can refill a diff with a 50ml bottle of oil...
