i need some help on diff rebuilds guys... what do you use to clean the parts?

I use naphta, it cleans all the mess of easy. Just don't breathe to hard.

MEK, Methyl Ethyl Ketone. 10 bucks for a can at Home Depot. Go to Bed Bath and Beyond and pick up a Tea Strainer for 3 bucks. You put some of the MEK in a Mason Jar and you can keep reusing it. The Tea Strainer is a round wire mesh clamp thingy that holds all the diff parts perfectly. The MEK cuts the silicone and crud better than anything. Let the parts soak for a few minutes, swish them around and lay them out to dry. It's that easy. DO NOT put anything plastic or rubber in the MEK.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to pick up some of that. I had yet to find anything that cut through the silicone, so I usually just use paper towels and a lot of scrubbing with dishsoap and a toothbrush...

I tried the MEK tip last night. HOLY CRAP! That stuff just melts the Diff oil away to nothing in less than a minute. I bought one of the bigger ball type tea strainers so I could fit ALL the diff parts in at once. It's on a little chain that can be secured to the side of a mason jar. I swished it around.....let it sit while I had half a smoke...took it out...VOILA No more diff fluid mess ANYWHERE.

MEK smells pretty nasty....but man did it work AWESOME. Thanks for the tip Scrogg....

That's good to hear. Will have to pick some up.

As a side note, anyone know where to pick up a mason jar or a few? I may just end up buying pickles or something and dumping it just to have a stupid jar.

WalMart sells em. The mouth to mine was smaller than the tea strainer I bought....but a hammer and 30 seconds fixed that real quick ;-) So it's no longer round....more oval like. lol

Pickle jar, my Walmart only sells mason jars in cases. Any glass jar with a metal lid will do. Sorry it took me so long to reply. I forget about threads after a few days. Remind me in the future.
Glad it helped you guys!
Mods can we please make this a sticky or something for future use. God knows there are more people wanting a better way too clean diffs.

I have used the MEK trick back in the states but I can't get it here. I actually hate the stuff, the smell gives me a headache in 10 seconds flat. I used to be around it all the time and work and I guess I grew to hate the smell....but yes it works great. Tric also works well but good luck finding it. I had an agitated skysol vat at work and it did the trick too with out the horrid smell and it was not too hard on plastics either.
