RC Driving Style
  1. Bashing
I was wondering if the diffs on my savage are tunable with different diff fluids to change the action and what would you guys use for bashing.

heard of people running 30,000 in front and 50,000 in rear. have never tried it. been using regular bearing grease in mine, and now have switched to hi temp, its stickier and hopefully will be better protection.

I run 60k front and rear in my XL for no reason other than thats all I had when I rebuilt the diffs. For a straight basher you arent going to notice much difference between a 30k or a 60k oil in a diff. The only time you will really notice a difference is in a race tuned truck on a track. Other than that just pick some decently thick oil and let er rip.

i tried 90w one time.the poor little things wouldnt even move! rc stuff isnt redily available where i live so i use what i have handy

I run 50K in mine, front/rear on a savage X. I've always ran 50K in my savages for bashing. Not so stiff that you lose much diff action, but stiff enough that if you get high centered on something, you get enough power to the wheels on the ground to get it over whatever it's stuck on.

Hmmm good to know. When I rebuilt mine I just used grease local hobby shop has no diff oil. Ill have to find something that will work at the local auto shop. I would like it better if both wheels would hook up instead of the current 1 wheel drive

i use grease too. may want to switch to red high temp grease like i did in my rigs, those little gears really gotta be hummin when the truck is going 35mph and i dont know that plain axle grease is upto par for that job. i buy it by the tube at my autoparts store.
also, i think grease is stiffer than the silicone fluid most people use. the stuff pours, whereas the grease dont

Ya probably a good idea. I think I used the diff grease that came with the gear kit. But will switch it out shortly

The gears cut a path through the grease in the cups, so you don't get any posi-traction after a few minutes of running. 50K oil is like honey, fluid, but not very. So the gears don't cut a path through it and are forced to squeeze it through the teeth all the time giving you your posi-traction.

interesting, never thought that out. my mindset was in the lubrication aspect

hmmm guess ill order some oil... since i know my local shop will not get me any within this century.. Still waiting for fuel 3 weeks later

I still use grease on the ring/pinion though. There's probably a more tacky grease out there than what I use, but it seems to hold up ok anyway even if it does cut a path through, the gears always seem to have some on them whenever I have to service a diff.
