Got a Mk 17, USSR-era diesel from Carlson Engine imports, some fuel from Ex Model Engines, a little tygon tubing, and fired up my first miniature diesel for less $ spent than a new glow engine.
It's a cool little engine, definitely going to be matching it to a suitable plane.
First impression - it 100% smells like a big smoky diesel, I enjoyed it though they get called "smelly". It has much deeper, oilier combustion odor than the kind of toasty, tangy exhaust you get from a glow engine, though I love that crispy nitro smell all the same.
Comes with a few goodies including a nice technical drawing / blueprint
Conical piston, which I think is to optimize the transfer
No schnuerle/loop porting, and the transfer ports can't overlap with the exhaust. I am guessing that the goal of the conical piston is to direct the incoming fuel/air charge upwards though the center of the cylinder and pseudo-loop-scavenges the exhaust out down the sides. The upper ports are exhaust, lower ports are intake, both running all the way around the cylinder with 3 cuts.
No transfer channels - the liner floats inside the crankcase past the ports.
Evidence of a factory run-in?
