Is it just me, or am I loosing it, ( nitro fumes ) but I thought I read somewhere that it was mentioned about the Savage X at half tank of fuel started to run lean. I went into the search and can't find anything on it. Does anyone remember a thread on anything like this, and if so, get me a copy of the thread or what was the cause and what was the cure!

Is it the tank? Is there a cure other than adjusting at half tank(anoying) or keep it more on the rich side all the time. What is your cure to it olds.
 
You can do the uniflow mod to your tank. Sweetdiesel did a great post on it. I will look for it.
 
I replaced the tank with a buggy tank... and homeade brackets. Others use the uni-flow mod. Most just tune their engine when it's half full. Then when it's full, it's a little rich and when it's almost empty, it's a little lean.

For me, the tank was just a nuscance. I kept banging my knuckles on it when I was pulling the starter. But the few times I did run it with that tank, I noticed the engine tune changing quite a bit as the tank emptied.
 
I own an X (Same tank as other savages) and I just tune it at a rull tank, then when I notice it start to loose power and run lean I bring it in right away and richen it up 1/8-1/4 turn and its good to go for the rest of the tank.
 
Yeah, the Savage does lean at half tank, I notice it too. I just used about an eight inch piece of fuel tubing on the pressure side of the tank. Coil it up neatly and loosely ty-wrap it up. Did the trick for me!
 
Thanks guys, Jon I will look at that post. and MW are you saying you just replaced the pressure side tubing with 8 inchs of tubing for the pressure side and just coiled it up and zip tyed it up. The longer length of tubbing, what did that excactly do to solve the problem. Just stop backflow back up into the tank. I saw the post that SD did on the uniflow looks cool, And it sounds like it works.

do you really need the one way valve?

could i get away with doing it without the one way valve?

i noticed today when bashing that the truck was leaning out at about half way.

i guess that idea is just like a straw in a glass of water.

In essence yes. you would be getting a constant flow due to pressure not being lost since there is less fuel in the tank.
 
You can forgo the one way valve but you will need to run a much longer pressure line, to a length of 23 inches. Unless you run your tank completely dry, when you shut off the engine the pressure flows back into the tank and fuel will dump out your exhaust.

I would rather have the uniflow then try and get 2 feet of hose on my ride.

Yeah, the longer length of tube keeps the pressure up, or at least consistent. The problem with the Savage is, the tank design causes the pressure from the pipe to drop at about half tank, so it naturally leans out. By adding line, you create more space for the pipe to force air into, so there's no sudden pressure drop in the tank.

Though, after seeing SD's uniflow mod, I think I may give it a try! It'd allow me to do away with coiling the line up!
 
is that the only downside? when i shut off the engine fuel will get dumped in the exhaust?

i normally run the engine dry anyway.

ill do the mod and see about getting a one way valve if i have problems.

You know, I read that fantastic post by the Great Sweetdiesel and thought, hey, I bought his Savage not too long ago, I bet it has this fabulous uniflow mod on it!

So, I grab it off the shelf where it's been charging (since I'm going to run it tomorrow) and, low and behold, NO UNIFLOW MOD! I guess I should've paid the extra $2.25 to have the mod included, huh?

Ah, just bustin' ya a bit, cowboy! I've got all except the one-way done, but since I've had a couple beers, it'll have to wait until tomorrow. Awesome idea!

Sorry buddy, I swapped a newer tank in when I sold you the truck and forgot to put it back in. I still have the one way valve here somewhere, I can send it to you if you'd like.

Also it was not my idea, rossb did it first.

Of course, as long as I tell the boss it's not for personal supplies it's all good. If a few extra goodies "happen" to fall in the bag on the way out I can always blame you guys. lol JK

About the one way valve, if you leave some fuel in the tank, and depending on your atmospheric conditions, fuel will eventually push past the one way valve and into your exhaust. This has happened to me when I turned the engine off and left the truck sitting for an extended period of time. In my case after two days the pressure continued to build and the one way valve (it's just plastic with a rubber flapper to keep the fuel in one direction)was not enough to keep the fuel from flowing out the exhaust. Simple remedy for this is either run your tank to nearly dry and empty your tank after shutting it off for storage(which you should be doing anyway) or disconnect the fuel line from the engine and reconnect to the pressure fitting on the tank.
