Would it be easier if I emailed it to you? It's pretty large.
Something else interesting. I wanted to put a shortcut on the desktop for Hijack this, and same thing, I can drag it to the desktop, but it snaps back and doesn't leave the short cut.

Ok.... If its really taking this long to do, I would either call or go to best buy or circuit city or something and they will tell you.... I can't imagine that its really this hard... ????

It doesn't matter where you drag it. You can drag it all the way to the right side of the screen, but when you let go, it snaps right back where it was?

When I tried correcting the problem, all the icons went to straight lines on the left. They would move according to whether I arranged them by date, size or name, but I had no control of moving them manually back to where I wanted them. When I ran Roxio GoBack, all the icons were replaced where I had chosen to put them originally, but still couldn't be manually moved.
I've probably booted, rebooted and cold booted over 20 times in the last 2 days while trying to work this out, and nothing changed.

Now here's the kicker.........I just booted up for the first time today, about a half hour ago, and the first thing I did was drag an icon. It moved, and it stayed where I put it.
Nothing has been changed in my settings to correct it, it just decided to behave on its' own. They don't call them Personal Confusers for nothing.

i can bet you have never really used win 98 or me ...as far as taking it to best buy or circuit city ... if you can make them understand the problem they will probily just do something stuipid like format the drive or try to put a new motherboard or something ...also if your having a problem with a wheel coming off a rim on your buggy continualy or other random problem do you send it to ofna?
 
Circuit city would do nothing. I didn't buy it there, it's not on warranty, I built it. It's been flawless for 2 years.
It just started doing something wierd, and there should have been a simple fix.
My $1000 HP with XP is nothing but trouble, and I rarely use it. This one is faster and totally reliable. Brand new parts on Ebay, and hardware with rebates, brought the total cost to $240.

You could probably shorten this sentence to: "XP is nothing but trouble." If you had the skills you could format that drive and install Windows 98 SE on that HP and it would be blazing fast. The only issue you might have is being able to find all of the Win98 drivers. If you can't get Win98 drivers, you can certainly get Windows 2000 installed. It wouldn't be as fast as 98, but it would a lot faster than XP and much less trouble than XP.

I use win2k. I installed win2k the machine I'm typing on on 3/28/2001!! Back in the days of Win98 I used to reinstall Windows about every 6 months. If that gives you any idea how picky I am. No problems with win2k for almost 4 years.

Your icon problem is strange at best. One of the odd things I noticed about your screenshot is that you don't have a start button and no task bar? or you have it set to auto-hide. Some guys like to use aftermarket "shells" instead of Windows Explorer. You don't use a weird shell like Litestep do you?

At least it's working right, for now.

The task bar is set at 'always on top' and 'auto hide'.
It's 3 hours later, and everything is still working. Even my monitor shut off after 15 minutes of idle time.
I've been pulling files from the XP comp so I can reformat it and start anew.
It did not come with a disc, but instead has the OS on a partitioned drive.
I don't recall how to access that for a total 'destructive' system restore.
I thought it was a matter of tapping F8 or F10 while it's booting up, but when I tried that I got a fatal error, and it locked up.

bigfreak, I definately want to thank you for your time in helping me out here.
Strangly enough, it's always the small annoying problems that are the most difficult to solve, but when the computer won't do what it's told to do, it's enough to make you want to adjust it with a bigger hammer.
 
XP has way too many securities. 98 is the easiest OS there is.
 
I have the discs to install 98SE, and I just might do that once I get my files out of the XP comp.
I've been through 3.11, Win 95, Win 98 and XP Home. 98 is absolutely the best I've used.
Problem is, MS will discontinue support on it soon, and a lot of new programs will only run on XP or above. That's the way it always goes.
It's like buying a new car, and then having to change the engine and transmission when they change additives in the gasoline.

Remember XP and Win2k share the same NT-based kernel. Programs for XP (Games included) all run on Win2k too. I see win2k as the best of both worlds. Because it's based on NT, it's stable and doesn't develop DLL HELL like Windows 98/Me. Win2k uses the same good old interface Windows 98 does so it's like second nature using it. You don't have to fumble around to find stuff like you do in XP. Win2k also runs all the modern games. The older DOS-based games like Duke Nukem 3d and the original Quake will probably kick up a fuss on win2k, but those games are old as dirt by now (try 8 years old).

Win98 is smaller and faster than win2k, but it's getting next to impossible to find drivers for the modern hardware. It may not be offically dropped by MS yet, but a lot of manufactures like Dell & HP have dropped support for it being installed on their newer systems (no drivers). Also, the worst thing about Win98 in my mind is the system rot which is contracts so easily.

I think we should all get together and develop an entirely new operating system without the flaws that come bundled with Windows.
Instead of Windows, we could call it 'Doors', or better still 'Gates'.
THAT would get a certain someone's attention.
