Crawling should I?

Sweet. I was thinking a saddle pack (slowgreen) and using the charger I have. Nimh of course. 3-4000 mah if I can find one. How does taht sound? Wow, I knew we were a tight knit family but what a help you guys have been.

mmm, I think I will just get a simple brushed setup then go for lipo once I get into it a little more.

yeah lipo's are awesome, i love mine with my brushed setup, but i also liked the saddle pack as well and it charged so much faster than my lipo.

AX-10 Kit
JR Racing Z650M High Torque servo
Rooster Crawler ESC with Novac 55t expert motor
works with lipo and nimh and nicd.

yeah. 45 min runtimes are fine as long as it takes less than like half an hour to charge. Thats a reasonable expectation right?

yeah it is. my charger for my nimh is 15 minutes to charge wich gives u time to take a little break after an hour of solid crawling. by the time the my lipo's are dead I've had enough crawling for a day anyways lol.

drain it, charge it, drain it, charge it. I've run hundreds of batteries, and never have cycled one.

alpines got it, i dont know lol, i just charged my nimh batteries when they would go dead. although i balance my lipo every other charge.

I mean, when you get it at first, do you just fully charge then fully kill it? do nimh batteries hold a memory at all?

some people say that they do, but i have never seen it. I just use my batteries, and when I'm done playing, i charge them. You might want to get a peak charger though, every once in a while, let it slowly peak charge.

yeah I've never really taken much care in my nimh batteries, not to say i tear them up but i dont take much caution with them like i do with my lipo's. prolly just cuz i have so many nimh batteries.

Can I throw in a third option for a battery?

I use A123 batteries n my Axial. The 1100mAh 3S triangle pack is small enough to tuck up somewhere on an Axial (I have mine on the front axle next to the servo on the 'long' servo/battery plate). 1100mAh gives me 40-50 mins runtime using a Sidewinder and an Integy 55T Lathe motor.

A123 is lighter and smaller than NiMH, charges fast (up to 4C if you are in a real hurry) BUT you need a charger to handle A123 or LiFe with 3.3V cells though. It's also safer to charge and use than LiPo, almost as safe as NiMH.

Just a thought. I'm starting to sound like I own shares in A123 ;)

NiMH batteries do have a memory. It's not like a NiCd where you can ruin the battery in a few days, but if you constantly discharge about 20% of your battery, then charge it, and never give it a full cycle, performance and runtime will decrease.

Alpine has cycled batteries. Everytime that you run an RC battery until it's dead, and then you charge it back up, that's technically a cycle. As long as you run your nimh batteries all the way down every once in a while, they'll be fine.

Flander, you don't need a 3-4000 nimh battery. You only want to run a 2/3A battery pack because of size and weight, and I think 1500-1600 is the biggest they come, and that's plenty big enough.

I would reccomend getting a Castle Sidewinder ESC and a lathe motor to start with. With the Novak you can only run 7 cell saddle packs and 2S LiPo. When you get into crawling, you're going to want to upgrade your motor eventually. The best thing that you can do with any crawler motor is volt up and gear down, which will give you the best low end throttle response and startup routine. I used to only run Novak, until I ran a really nice Mamba/brushed setup. Now that's all I run. With the sidewinder, you can run an 8 or 10 cell saddle pack and gear down, which will give you much better low end throttle response, which equates to better control and better performance, and you will also have more wheelspeed at the same time. Also, you can get the sidewinders quite cheap, and they have a special coating that makes them fairly water resistant. I'm not telling you that you can drive it on the bottom of the lake for extended periods of time exposed, but it will handle some splashes and things like that. It's also fully programmable on your computer with a USB port, so you can prgram throttle curves, braking curves, drag brake, reverse percentage, and a ton of other things. I sell the Novak ESC and motor, so I have no reason to lie to you. I carry Castle and Novak. The Novak is ok, I just find the the Castle offers a lot more for less money, with lots of potential in the future. When you start crawling you're going to be hooked, and want to upgrade your motor and things like that, and with the Castle you will be able to use the same ESC with any brushed motor and run the voltage that you need, as opposed to have to get a new ESC when you step up to a bigger motor and 11.1 volts LiPo or 8 or 10 cell NiMH.

So you opened a store charlie? I think I will stick to NIMH batteries, the biggest I can get in saddle I think. Thanks for the advice charlie and its good to see you're alright.

If you have a good charger/discharger then run the packs down before you charge them. That's what I do with my stick packs (they are NiCad so they need doing every-time or the packs degrade). It doesn't do any harm to do the same on NiMH, as it'll prevent any memory at all reducing the runtime.
