Looking to get my 7 year old into the hobby. He has been beating on his EZRC jeep scaler for a while so now it’s time to get him into something a lil more hobby grade. Looking for 1/10 or 1/8 scale crawler or scaler for around $250 shipped RTR minus batteries.

May I suggest buying all the parts and you two build it together? Great way for him to learn.
That will be the plan eventually. I’ve built dozens of rigs over the years. Not looking to throw down the $$ for a built rig yet until I know for sure he will stick with it. That’s why I’m looking for something for a couple hundred bucks that he can mess around with.

I get it bud, you might look into Redcat Racing. I'm not a fan of their bashers but others would agree, they make decent crawlers.
Have you considered 1/24 scale? They are extremely popular anymore and are easy on the wallet.
A lot of these guys here run the and build their own basement crawler course so to speak.

I’ve been building crawlers/scalers (as well as bashers in gas/nitro electric) for over 20 years now. Not trying to sound like a douche, but I’m familiar with most all aspects of this stuff. I need 10th or 8th scale for him for the obstacles I have in my back yard. We have tried the 1/18 and they have struggled too much so he can only do around half of the stuff setup.

Eventually we will build an axial based MOA setup. But like I said, I don’t want to throw down the big money like I used to until I know he will stick with the interest.

If you're a member at Tower Hobbies, they have the Axial Base Camp in their Scratch & Dent for $279
my son loves his basecamp, wont drive anything else cause its not his, honestly i dig the tar out of it myself, hella capable

You will not find that scale for that size, the scratch n dent suggestion is probably as close as you will get. Consider building one, it will honestly be worlds apart from RTR, and not much more expensive.
1/18 is a great scale, you just need to scale down your obstacles in the backyard to cater to it. The Capra UTB18 is a big 1/18 and they say it goes where any 1/10 will go. They are $150 - 180 right now for the 2wheel steer.
Any 1/10 RTR is going to need wheels n tires from the get-go, among other things. The Redcat Ascent looks like the best bang for the buck at the 1/10 level.

my ascent is a beast, i absolutely love it, insanely capable right out of the box, id 10/10 recomend one for a friend

have you checked fb marketplace? i always come across someone getting out of the hobby and many times people offer entire collections for the cheap just to recoup a little on their way out.
i bought 6 trucks for 500 last year (ascent, bigrock, stampede, rustler, and a wraith), was super stoked. swear to god the ascent was one of em lol was my favorite out of the sale. i realize thats a bit more than your wamntiojng to spend, but the point being theres sometimes a good deal to be had, especially if you likes to haggle.
