hello once again... it seems that my cooling head has had a run in with some pavement, and at first glance, i thought it was just the motor mount and the mount plate that broke. but when i begain the disassembly to put in the new parts, i discovered that my crankcase is cracked. the crack isnt bad, just enough to notice once you start to remove the motor mount, and its only cracked right along one of mounting tabs. i dont even have a gallon of fuel through this motor. now, i have read that it is not recomended to remove or install the crankcase bearings because they damage easily and slight misalignment could result in catastrophic engine failure.

i plan on getting a new block and swapping all the parts i can to the new block, cause its pretty much a new engine.

does anyone have any input on this situation? is it just better off to find a block with bearings? should i just call it a loss because of the possibility of bent interals? any help is greatly appreciated, and as always...the "Salvage" thanks you!

I've done this before; You're better off to replace the block with bearings, since it'll be easier, at the very least. And, if you haven't done it already, invest in the X rollcage set. It'll protect your engine from such an impact.

how well will that protect my motor? this was pretty much an upside down landing...pretty hard as far as i know(i couldnt see the landing, but when i heard the motor stall...i knew there was trouble) i have one of those cheapy cage from ebay, which i plan on reinforcing with some triangululation and extra links...my plan is to basically make this cage into a complete shell, similar to the $100 RC solutions ones.

the "Salvage" thanks you :deadhorse

Well, it probably won't save the engine from a super-high jump. But, if it's a mild jump, say 6 foot or so (hey, that's mild for a savage, lol), it'll definately help take up a lot of the abuse. It's saved my F4.1 from several lid landings (most of which were wheelies gone bad on concrete, but there were a couple from 3 feet or so in the air, landing on concrete).

If it's the stock TVPs and you're doing massive air (12 feet in the air or more), a full cage might be warranted.

The only complaint I have about the X rollcage is its' a little low profile. If they had it about an inch or so higher off the engine, it'd be perfect. Otherwise, for $14 or so, it's a cheap investment.

You can see a picture of it in the Team Infinity pipe thread.

if you are stock length the only cage that is worth the money is the rage cage. Its made from delrin and has stood up to severe bashing. I tore up an rcs cage in less than 4 tanks and the delrin one has never flinched. I cut it when i went extended and its still holding together like a champ

What's the "rage cage"? Got a link?

I use 5/16" steel bar... I'm not known for my "pretty" trucks. 4-5 feet landings on the roof on concrete makes sparks...

They may not be "pretty"...But I darn sure wouldn't worry about driving it like I owned it!!!! Olds, I really like your set up on your truck....As more funds become available I would really like to put together a "basher" with some real strength...For the time being I will continue to use a little caution while driving...I still don't know how "Fast" mine can really go. I have yet to let it really wind out in second....I am also curious about the rage cage....

Hey! I like that! Do you have any better pics of it?

Kind of reminds me of a custom one I saw elsewhere:

EDIT:

I emailed the guy about the cage and he replied an hour later. He doesn't make them anymore, but he gave me the above link so I could see a few more pics.
