I'm planning on sealing my 3.3 Traxxas while I do some other upgrades to the truck. I'm just curious why everyone recomends copper silicone. I'm a certified auto mechanic by trade, and we almost never use anything other than gray RTV. I was planning to use gray when I sealed my motor, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I was missing about the copper before I did it.

No reason. I use the permatex ultra black and the grey stuff also. The silicone just needs to be heat resistant up to 350F and O2 sensor safe, so you know it will not eat the aluminum.

+1 to what Scrogg said. As long as it's O2 safe...you're good. I use Permatex Ultra Copper personally.

+1 on that as well. High temp and sensor safe is all I really look for. Bought a tube of the ultra copper many years ago... and many engines ago and have yet to use 1/3 of the tube.

Thanks for the input guys. I use Ultra Gray on a daily basis at work, and have had outstanding luck with it. I just didn't want to miss something and create a headache.

Just noticed you are from Valdosta. I was stationed there on the A.F.B. for 3 years. Don't miss that place one bit! That was 14+years ago though, maybe it's not as boring now.
Anyways back on topic, I noticed GM's brand grey silicone has the best adhesion out of all of them. I have a friend who is a GM mechanic, he gave me a few tubes. It worked perfectly, just a little harder to remove.

Unfortunatley, "Valdumpster" hasn't changed a whole lot. At least now we have a hobby shop whose owner is dead serious about it work. That's probably about the only thing any different. You're right about the GM stuff, it's killer. But with GM's current status, that stuff is like gold. The three dealers here in town don't even use it unless it absolutely called for on a warranty job or something like that, they buy Ultra Grey from the parts house. I've got a stash of HondaBond that seems to be real damn similar to the GM stuff.
I used to take my Malibu up your way and run some street car shootouts and outlaw races at the track in Aikin. Had a lot of fun, but never ventured out much from the track. Is that still a pretty active track?

Jackson Dragstrip is still alive and well as far as I know, have not been there in a while.
We have one of the best r/c tracks in the Southeast as well in Aiken. We're racing Friday & Saturday. Come on up!
