Hey all, I was wondering if anyone knew if there was any sort of special coating on after-market cooling heads. I am holding an ACNCM giant cooling head for my TMaxx 2.5 and when I'm looking at the glow plug coil, the base around it is gold, while the rest of the head is silver aluminum. Some of the gold has rubbed off. I bought this used off ebay. Can anyone tell me if this is a special coating or is it just dirty?

Dirty. Sounds like fuel residue/varnish build up. I'd leave it as it is though. If you scratch it up, you run the risk of messing up the seal where it makes contact with the crank case.

Hmm, I wiped it off with some paper, but the surface was kinda rough looking to begin with. Also, I can't get the glow plug out of it. I think I might take it to my LHS tonight to see if they have a better tool than I do. I think I'll stay away from slightly used parts from now on.

If you don't want to keep it I'll take it off your hands, for the right price. Let me know.

I take it it's a good cooling head? I bought it on ebay for probably around 25 bux USD. I hope I can get it running tonight! My understanding is that I can lean out the mix a little more with a bigger head. True? And if I can't get it going, what would you want with a busted head?

Does it have the button that comes out? Worse come to worse ya can just buy a new button if ya have to.

yeah, if the button comes out, then if you dont have the head tightened down on the button, its a real PITA to get it out. I would tighten it down on the case with the head and use a wrench to get it out. That was my prob. when i rebuilt my last engine.

The problem is my plug wrench is the one that came with the TMaxx, and I have another glow ignitor/driver that Zandor gave me last christmas, but I lost the case so I can't get enough torque with my hand to unscrew it. I figured my LHS would have a longer plug wrench and be able to get it out. I am not sure what the "button" is. The head is tightened down on the engine and I've tried pretty hard to unscrew the plug. I think I just need a longer wrench because it's too hard to turn my driver. Thanks for all your suggestions!

the "button" is the piece that the glow plug screws into. Its on the very bottom of the head, and is usually pressed in there. I know alot of heads have this so ya can replace it if needed. Your hobby shop should be able to tell ya how to go about it. (ya can check and see if it looks like 2 pieces on the bottom of the head.) Have ya tried using a socket on the glow plug to try to get it out that way? Thatd give ya a little more tourqe.

Pat, 4u: I'm following this simply to further my own personal knowledge. Can you explain to me what you mean by "button"?

MaxxMaster: My apologies if I am derailing your thread. Don't mean to do so intentionally.

EDIT: Disregard, 4u posted the answer as I was typing this.

I'm still interested if your lhs can't take it out. As long as its not broken I'll prob take it.

The button is usually replaced when the threads for the glowplug become sloppy or stripped. Not all cooling heads have a removable button.

Hope that helped ya... :smoke:

If you have access to a 1/4" square drive socket set, a 5/16" AF socket is a good fit for glowplugs (an 8mm metric socket may also fit). You'll also need a short extension bar (3" or so) and a T-handle or ratchet wrench.

Try heating the bottom of the head or the button and use some "penetrating oil" or dismantling fluid (PlusGas is a popular brand here in the UK) before carefully attempting to remove the glowplug.

If the glowplug is gummed up with burnt castor oil/varnish then carburettor cleaner for 1:1 cars may free it up. I find that the Xylene based cleaners are the best but they sting like a muthahumper on bare skin, so be careful!

Hey now! You did ask me if I thought it it had enough bottom end, lol. But at least you learned an important lesson....always run a body, especially if I am driving it.
