Ok guys here one more computer question what program do you use to clean out the junk files and stuff on hard drive ? i have a 40 gig drive an a 10 gig drive i use 10 gig for os only dont download anything to it but its magicly filled up lately and i can't figure out what did it

everything I've downloaded went to the 40 giger i have checked that and run norton virus checker and other programs trying to figure it out ..system has slowed down a little but not much ..

Also i dont have a lot of programs loaded into it any ideals and a good program to use thx guys

Ok if you are running XP pro just go into accesories >>> system tools >>>> disk slean up just check it all and let it delte it all ... Then go into disk defragmenter and defrag both drives....X

only took out 2 mb and i run diskkeeper pro to defrag anyothers ideals thx

I've found that "Disk Cleaners" do just that, they tend to clean the whole damn drive.

Many will delete files because they think they are not needed, on to find out the the next time you reboot - your now looking for your windows disk to reinstall windows.

Moral of the story is: Use the Delete Key! Go through each file and delete them yourself. If you dont know what the file is or does leave it there or ask someone else.

Follow that method and you can't go wrong.

God advice woodie.. Also you can do a search for *.mpg or *.avi or *.jpg and delete those gigs of pron and that will free up lots of space... :)

but x thats on the 40 gig drive ... the storage one lol this is the main os drive I'm having probs with .. i know i dont have 10 gigs of operating progs on it

You might not download things to your OS drive, but odds are your internet explorer has been placing all of its temp files somewhere on it. Unless you establish a limit for the "download" cache, your browser will just fill up every empty spot on your computer.

If you run IE (any version), you need to go to tools, internet options, delete temporary files....when it asks for all or none...click yes to all (including cookies). All internet files reload each time you hit a page. The temp files only speed up the process. If you have been surfing a lot, but not returning to the same sites regularly...your cache is probably full and overflowing. Dump it.

Next look for any folders labeled temporary in all directories and dump them. Caution here....make sure all applications are closed or you may lose whatever you are working on. Most OS will open a temp file for every application file you work with. When you close it, the OS is supposed to dump the temp....this doesn't always happen as advertised and you get a stock pile of temp files that mean absolutely nothing to you.

Finally, if you have Norton Utiliities...run the Disk Doctor...some of your allocation blocks might be messed up. This will cause the computer to indicate more memory being used than is actually full. After that defrag the hard drive. This repairs fragmented files and moves the memory stores around to fill up all the empty space....in effect compacting the disk...this gives you one big free block of memory.

Give all of the above a try and get back to me.

I do limit the crap ie can store cleaed all that anyways .. dumpped all the temp flies earlyer and did the norton thing ..like i said its really weird one day it was like 50% free and week later its full maybe windows is reporting it wrong but it does say its a 10.2 gb drive

All good ideas I'm bout ready to format it and reload the os but thats a pain i wan skip this week

Anything else?

The only other thought is that perhaps one of your movies got misdirected and is saved somewhere on your OS drive. That leaves you with the hunt and peck method that WoodiE described. It is manual and time consuming, but it does work. The only hard part is that you have to know what you are looking for; otherwise, you might arbitrarily delete something that the OS needs. This could be bad.

My recommendation: Backup the necessary stuff, wipe the hard drive, and start over.
