Computer Locking up

I'm having 2 problems with my machine.

1) What all can make a computer lock up?

I have ran all spyware programs including..spysweeper, ad-aware, pest patrol..etc. It will lock up and will not let me access Task Manager by hitting CONTROL+ALT+DELETE. They only way out of it is by rebooting. Its beginning to become a real pain in the butt.

2) What will make a computer shutdown?

For no reason this machine will shutdown on its own. Its almost like it knows when I'm ONLINE and decides to unplug itself from the wall. I find this only happening when there is activity going on. I could leave my machine on over night and its stilll running the next day..not a problem. But if i sit down and surf the web, it shutsdown after a while. I kept a timelog and there is no paticular pattern when it dies.

What can be going on? I have ran updated Norton Antivirus and hasnt seem to help any.

The thing that gets me is my computer isnt idleing when it dies.

Hardware problem or more likely a virus problem???

possiably your cpu could be getting to hot and locking or you could have a bad stick of ram. ( try blowing out ur computer ) next run HiJack This. If that doesn't do it try running AVG with all the updates in safe mode. If nothing is found on ither of those two i would try to run a repair on xp or just completly reformat. If you have a spare HD i woud recomend that you just install windows xp on that and give it a try. If youve done all of the above and still no workie........ its definatly a hardware problem

I had this same problem I replaced my mother board and prosser .still whould lock up only when i surfed the web with the help of ryhton we found the problem with the prosses of elimition.. and found out my rewright drive was bad.causeing the coumputer to lock up. try unhooking every thing but your monitar key board and mouse. If it still does it open up your tower and unplug your rewright drive if you have one..fire it up and see how it does.if it still does it plug it back in and do the same thing intill you find the problem..
Iam not saying you are having the same problem that i had but this method will rule out some things..good luck
