A neighbor brought me her comp tower since she couldn't log on. The message after the password is, "Unable to load user profile service."
There's only the option to click Okay, and it starts over.
If I understood correctly, she was on Pogo, a game site, and some game required her to either disable or re-enable Java, or both. According to her, that was when the problem started.

I can only get in through Safe Mode.

While checking into the event log I got:

EDIT:
**************** Never mind, not it.

go in under safe mode, go to start, run, type in msconfig click the last tab that says startup, disable all and restart, once you get on go through and check each one individually till you find whats cuasing the problem, then try to reinstall whatever it is.

I have 4 more computers waiting for me when this one is done.
Once it's working, I'll wax it for her. :D

Thanks for that info, Doug. I'll try that.
Apparently, the exception I listed isn't the problem. That would be for insufficient file space, and her comp is almost empty.

In safe mode, I disabled her password, but got the same end result. It couldn't load her profile. I was about to start a new user account in there and see what I'd get.

It's an E-Machine and I have a repair disk for it if I need it. Just wanted to double check on it.

Any other advise would be appreciated.
Unable to create new user account in safe mode.
With ALL start up options disabled, same problem.

I'll have to run a system restore, but I need to know what's in there that she'll need.
It will back up files, but her programs will need to be reinstalled.

Are you going to do a system restore or a system reformat, if you are just restoring it to an earlier date the only programs you would have to reinstall would be ones that she had just installed between when the problem started and the date you choose to restore it back too, at least I think that is how system restore works...I need to reformat and reinstall windows and just am not feeling like dealing with reinstalling all my programs and all of the drivers and crap to get it all working again, it is a pain in the a$$!!!!! IMO

Have you tried booting last known good configuration?
With the repair disk i would try a new mbr (master boot record) first.
If you do a lot of work on pc's these are some very helpful utility's:
UBCD
TRINITY

first off what OS is it? when you go safe mode can you log into her account or is it the admin account you are using? if you are under her this may be the reason you cannot create an account. try logging into the admin account and making one.

Edit: if its vista try this..

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/1...-failed-logon-user-profile-cannot-loaded.html

it seems the profile has been put in a locked state. this link will tell you how to unlock it, but its pretty technical. if you have any problems lmk and i will try to help.

if all else fails. it seems a system restore to previous state seems to fix it as well. but you will loose any changes to the system between the last restore point and now.

It's Vista.

Mr. Bob and Beason, that's EXACTLY the info I printed out last night, and I'll be correcting it later.
It's an error in Vista when it backs up files.

You know Ralph I had thought about upgrading to Vista but I am just scared of it. I just don't like all the extra stupid stuff that goes with it.

I got a free copy of Vista at an MS conference...and I've been impressed with it so far actually. I have had 0 issues with my hardware....

i run it at work for our pre deploy pilot. and i have it on my laptop at home. I've had a few issues here and there. but its mostly stemming from the "security" settings in vista.

I'm running Vista on my main comp, and other than some irritating security popups, I'm totally satisfied with it. I've had it over a year, now.

yea for the average user, vista is ok. except for the occasional "are you really sure you want to do this??" pop up its nice.

now what i do at work.. thats a different story. the "techie" stuff in vista is locked down pretty well, then we have government mandated "fdcc" security settings that lock it down even more.. I have to get creative at times to get around it. :D

you can turn off that "are you really sure" popup in vista. a quick google search should find it.
