Ok, so I was bored, and I'm getting tired of the loud hot bodies pipe on my Picco 26. And not having done a mod in a while, I got this crazy idea, make a second chamber on the exhaust system. Scrounging around, I found a Traxxas 4tec pipe and proceeded to gut and mod it. Here's what it ended up looking like:

siamesepipe.jpg

The second pipe has had the tip taken off and the hole opened up. Since the pipe is held together with a bolt along the log axis, I installed a screen between the halves and used about 15 pieces of fuel tubing as a sound baffle that wouldn't restrict the exhaust. It's connected to the HB pipe with the Traxxas rubber header off the 4Tec also. So, why is it useless? The good news is that it doesn't affect the tuning much, but it only reduces the sound level by a marginal level. I'll have to try it outside next week, so it's yet to be seen if this is anything other than a "WTF". For the old timers, it doesn't quite make it compared to the coke can silencer.

For this old timer It's not a coke can for a silencer it's a Coke bottle 2 litre type to be exact :stick:

About 6 months ago (give or take) I made a silencer for the savage. I used a 12 oz coke can, a bunch of tubing, and some other parts. It hooked up to the pipe and made the thing a stealth truck. I mean it was quiet. Most of the sound was from the con rod and the carb. I was hoping for something like that (maybe not as quiet), but it just didn't quite do what I wanted. Looks kind of cool at any rate.

So what does the third-stage clove oil bottle silencer at the bottom of the picture do?

:jk:

You're still tryin' to please your neighbors, huh?

Not as much as the Benz-o-matic butane injection mod I'm thinking of.

Piss on the neighbors, that pipe hurts my ears.

Can you give me anymore on the coke can silencer? I would be interestedin a stealth truck from time to time ;0)

Boy Whitt your wheels are always turnning lol, Keep trying. That fuel line shut off clamp thingy does it have a real name because I want one. Hey I like that rc stand,;) hows it working for ya?

Nice work, savagejunkie. I definitely get tired of cleaning goo off the wheels and arms.

Pee Wee, it works great, and rock solid.

SavageJunkie: Looks good bro, though as I said, the purpose of my project was to quieten the thing down. My truck is never clean, I just knock the clods off from time to time.

The Coke can silencer: I'll have to dig up the pix, but essentially it's a 12oz coke can, the top half of a 20oz plastic coke bottle, some 3/8ths" rubber piping, a bunch of 2" sections of 3/16ths" plastic tubes, and a lot of hot glue and tape. I cut the can in half, punched a hole in the bottom and put a 2.5" section of the 3/8th rubber piping in it and hot glued it. Next, I took a crapton of the little plastic tubes and hot glued them to the inside of the bottom half of the coke can (lengthwise, and only half way in the can, you'll see why later). Once the cross section of the can was filled with these plastic tubes, I took the top half of the can and got it to slip over the exposed half of the little tubes, and hot glued the two halves back together. I then took the top half of the 20oz coke bottle and punched another hole in it like the bottom and fit another section of the large rubber piping and hot glued that. Then hot glue the plastic bottle to the top of the can. Tada, a 3 chamer exhaust silencer. The tough part is mounting it. At the time I was using a helicopter pipe instead of a car pipe on my Savage. The tip on the heli pipe is inline out the end of the pipe and not out the side. So, I rubberbanded the silencer between the front shock tower and the bumper, and connected the pipe to the silencer with a hobbyco exhaust deflector to the rubber intake on the silencer. It worked great as far as making it quiet, but it created some added back pressure and needed serious retuning when it was installed.

Hopefully I can find the pix, and I'll try to post them if I can.

savagejunkie

thats a cool mod.
Do you have any problems with it getting in the way of anything? Or do you have any problems with it at all? Where did you get the pipe?

The mod has been on for a few months now and no! its in the way of nothing it was very easy to make bought the pipe from home depot and bent it to fit, it also gives the savage a more throaty sound that i like i actually feel it improved my top end better. My friend is a local sheriff and with his radar gun i went from 26mph to 31 mph but there can be other factors that helped that, althourgh nothing was done to the savage except the exhaust mod. ITS SWEET:stick:

Error, I was bored and actually tried the butane a few months ago. Sadly though it doesn't work. I made a long intake out of some home depot rubber piping and made a small hole in the side and attached about a foot of fuel tubing to it and then stuck the air filter on the end of the rubber hose. I then hooked up the other end of the fuel tubing to a can of Ronson Butane. I was hoping that I could get a little boost with a small amount of butane mixed with the incoming air. If you give it too much it dies instantly and with just a little it just starts to bog down. I didn't really devote much time to it so it may require some drastic adjusting of the needle settings but as far as I know it doesn't work.

Sorry to hear about that. I was kind of joking about the butane mod in response to WDH's comment about the third stage muffler, and the can of butane just happened to be in the picture (just to the right of the truck stand). The only real intake boost mod I can think of is an oxygen injector and tuning the needles alot richer to compensate for the excess oxygen. I guess it could be done, but it'd be a pain and the O2 supply would limit the runtime instead of the fuel supply.

Thanks anyway for posting the heads up on the butane mod, it'll save someone alot of time and effort in trying it out themselves.

What kind of truckstand is that on the picture,?? id like to get smthg like that, since i usually sit my truck on oversized can with vegetables :)

you guys wanna know what i use for a truck stand? since i have 2 different sets of tires, i jus use my big joes! jus put one under each body post kinda part of the savage and viola. haha kinda of the subject but you guys were askin for the name of errors so thought id give a cheap solution!

You might want to try using a softer walled hose instead of another exhaust pipe. All I have on mine is about 3 inches of 1:1 auto fuel line and it really take the bite out of the exhaust note and didn't affect tuning at all. Granted, this is on an XTM al tuned pipe that wasn't anywhere near as loud as the stock savage pipe, but it still took the sharpness out of it.

I can't stand loud and annoying unless it's a 1:1 big ass truck or a mustang cobra svt... then I'll listen :)

Damn, almost a year to the day from my last post in this thread.

The stand that I use was made by another member on RCNT, the name's peewee, you might send a PM his way to see if he's still making them. The stand is very robust and useful.

What is the best pipe to buy to quiet down the big block savage? I have been reading tons of forums that talk about pipes but no one really narrows it down to which one would provide a quiet ride without sacrafising performance.....Funny thing, my 1:1 truck is a newer Chev Silverado with a 5.3 and I tried tones of stuff to make it loud...now that I have the savage I wanna make it quieter....
