is there an upgrade type of clutch? those pegs wear down pretty quick........
 
There are a couple of options. First, yes, for the standard clutch you need the pegs or a reasonable replacement. These are what apply friction to the slipper pads to keep the spur from slipping too much. Now the options. One thing I have heard that works well is to use 12 1/8 scale diff balls and slip them in the holes. They will give a lot of stick. Or you can switch slippers to the RRP slipper which doesn't use pegs.
