do i have to have the red pegs in the slipper?

If you don't it will melt the spur gear or tear the teeth off of it since the slipper won't be slipping correctly.

rrp has one that has no pegs at all just pads

There are a couple of options. First, yes, for the standard clutch you need the pegs or a reasonable replacement. These are what apply friction to the slipper pads to keep the spur from slipping too much. Now the options. One thing I have heard that works well is to use 12 1/8 scale diff balls and slip them in the holes. They will give a lot of stick. Or you can switch slippers to the RRP slipper which doesn't use pegs.
