Hi everyone,

So I was out jumping snowbanks showing off for my kid this weekend and generally having a blast.

About 15 seconds before the Savage X quit moving I noticed a burning smell coming from the truck. It took a couple of tumbles and I thought it may have been some paint flakes from the body burning on the head. Anyway I cleared the snowbank and heard the idle change pitch and thought I may have stripped the spur but upon inspection it looks okay, a little knarled but making contact with the clutch bell.

I took the top off the tranny and found that the rear bearing seems to be wearing away the top of the case itself so it'll be time for a new tranny soon. The clutch bell when spun by my finger will spin freely in either direction, does this mean the clutch is gone?

Any other thoughts on where I should be looking?

It's supposed to spin freely in either directly.

I'd take a closer look at your spur. You may have melted the spur slipper area where makes contact with the gear.

It could be your shoes... but pulling the CB off the engine and taking a look will tell you if those were slipping so much they melted and exuded a smell.

You're good!

As you said it was the slipper pad burnt off, the spur took a bit of a beating too but and probably could still function but I replaced it. The tranny lid is definately wearing down causing the spur to be pulled down to the CB and wearing the teeth on a slight angle as well.

Checking around for lid prices and they're all around $30 CDN for the entire case...bit of a bummer.

Thanks for your help.
