I used to clean mine with WD-40. It worked okay IMO, until I got a little too much on the slipper clutch friction material and ruined it. Now I use non-chlorinated brake cleaner (chlorinated brake cleaner will ruin rubber and plastics) and a little bit of compressed air. It takes less than 5 minutes, and works great.
 
Fantastic or 409 and some wiping/compressed air does the trick just fine too. Never thought about it too much. Just never wanted to take a chance using automotive cleaners or other harsh chemicals. Q-tips are your friend, too.
