Maybe you guys can help, I am on my third tank of fuel in my Savage. I can get it started (though it takes a while) and once it is running it will only stay running if the glow plug heater is attached. Once I take it off it stalls. My local dealer told me to preheat the engine the first few ttimes I start it. I did that and the Venom temp gauge shows 150 to 190 degrees. Could this be a bad glow plug? When I was starting it on the second tank I had to lean the low needle out a little to keep it running because it seemed to be getting too much fuel to stay running.

Check the glow plug. Also check the idle, it may be to low. Reset the needles back to factory settings. Is the fuel good or is it old? Try those things first, and we can go from there.

Also try to lean out the lSN by about 1/8th of a turn. If its not your glowplug, there is too much fuel getting into the engine putting out your glowplug.

I had the same thing happen on my Maxx the other day. Changed the glow plug and it was fine. Ran like a top.

If you take the igniter off and it stalls, the glow plug may be dead. This, however, is not always the case. Having an extra glow plug on hand is always a good idea. That way, you could swap plugs and see if the problem goes away.

I've had the glow plug get wet with fuel like mjime714 said. It acts just like a dead plug, but it's not. You might wants to reset the carb to factory settings if it turns out not to be the glow plug.

I may be "Novice" Rob, but I've had personal experience with this very same problem. ;)

good luck

Just a simple question.

Did you break in the motor? Did you buy it used?

If you didnt break in the motor, it will be doing everything of what you said on the third tank.

I am in the process of the break in now. It was new when I bought it and this is only the third tank of fuel the truck has ever seen. I am going to try a new glow plug maybe this weekend but is there a way to tell if the plug is bad? I put it on the ignitor and it looked like the whole wire lit up but maybe the last 1/16 of it. Is the break-in period usually this tough?

Naw. Glow plugs are very inconsistant. You could buy one that runs you forever, but the next one, same manufacturer, same number only lasts one run. Burnt glow plugs during breakin is minor compaired to broken pull starters, blistered fingers, etc.

Yes, break in's are a PITA, and so is the rest of it, until the motor realizes that it's nice and old enough to start running everytime.:D

I went through 4 glo-plugs on the last motor I broke in, but the motor before that went the whole break in, and about three tanks more on the stock plug(OS #8).

Glo-plugs are very weird creatures.
