how do i buy directly from HPI? i've lokked through their website and can't seem to find anything

You can buy standard parts, option parts, and bodies etc off their site, but they charge a premium. You're better off going to your lhs or buying off the web.

eBay! Hobby sites are good for large orders, but for single items you can usually find a better deal, and lower shipping costs via eBay. Hobby sites usually have high shipping rates, like $7.00 to ship something like a bag of shims that don't weigh more than an ounce.

You go to the model you have and click on option parts or stock parts and then can buy what you need. I find most of the stuff is priced the same as my local Hobby Town, but don't know what shipping is like. I just bought a Savage X trans case/center bulkhead and high-speed 3rd gear from my lhs and it was the same price as on the HPI site.

Even eBay, for the stock replacement stuff is about the same unless it is a killer deal. That high-speed 3rd gear, with shipping on eBay is about identical to my lhs with local tax and I get it NOW.

i'm looking to buy a baja.......is the $100 rebate available through hobby stores?

Yes the Rebate offer is available though hobby shops and all authorized on-line HPI retailers such as Tower Hobbies. I just sent mine for a Savage Flux! Yay...thing is great.
