By now you all probably think I'm the most indecicive person you've ever met, but I finally FINALLy narrowed my first nitro to two candidates. The kyosho us sts truggy, or the Jammin buggy rtr.

Which do you guys think will serve me better to learn. I was really leaning towards the jammin since I could make it FT spec eventually. Plus, I just love buggies.

The cash I save on the kyosho's nice, but I'd have to upgrade at minimum the steering servo, throttle servo, and steering linkage. Plus, parts support isn't as good.

Lastly, do you think it's easier to learn how to drive 1/8th on a truggy or buggy? I thinkn I'd prefer the buggy.

Thanks.

Truggies are supposedly more forgiving to drive, but a little less durable due to the longer arms and larger/heavier wheels.

Side note:

To make a Jammin FTE spec from an RTR would cost more than the RTR itself. The Jammin has the biggest difference in parts quality from RTR to pro of any kit out right now I believe.

The pro kit has a better chassis, shock towers, shocks, axles, brakes, radio tray supports, radio tray, upper plate, steering plate, diff plate, wing supports, steering knuckles, upper and lower suspension blocks, z brace, motor mounts, etc.

That is pretty much every part upgraded except the wing, wing mount, body, the diffs, diff cases, rock guards, and fuel tank. I added it up once before and its around $600.00 worth of parts that you get screwed out of by going the RTR route with a Jammin instead of buying the kit.

Whoa. That's a lot. I never thought it would be that much. I should probably just get the kyosho then. Or, what about a hyper 8 rtr?

Or the Ofna mutilator. That seems like a good beginner truck.

***EDIT: I found a hyper 7 PBS rtr on tower for $330. Even though it's discontiued, should I jump on it? I seems like a good firts nitro to learn on.***

Oh, I don't think I'm qulified enough to rebuild a nitro engine. It's my first truck, and I'd prefer not to touch the engine till I'm comfortable.

Have you guys heard anything about the mutilator? Looks promising.

Sealing a new engine is recommended regardless of the brand or size...Espeicially off road engines. Do a little reading on sealing an engine, it's not hard to do.

I've read about it, and now I'm more skeptical. I'm too woried about the numorous things I can screw up. Are engines still under warranty if you take them apart to seal them?

P.S.- I meant first nitro truck. I've been building r.c.'s for 4 or 5 years now, sorry.

***EDIT: I've decided on the mutilator. It looks promising, especially for the price. Does anyone know what glow plugs I should get? Would 20% fuel be too much for bashing? Thanks a bunch.***

I would think twice about the Mutilator. It uses a kingpin suspension that is pretty weak especially compared to modern c-hub or PBS (MBX) type systems, its also based on a design that is really getting up there in age (9.5 series). A Jammin X1-CRT RTR would be a better deal if you had to go the RTR route.

Just make sure you get some alloy chassis braces, because the stock plastic braces on either of those trucks will allow enough flex that you could easily bend your center drive axles and even your chassis on a big impact.

EDIT: If you already bought the Mutilator, talk to this guy. He knows more about the 9.5 platform than probably anyone else. He buys enough parts for them when building his custom trucks that he could probably scrape together enough spare parts (still new) to convert the Mutilator's kingpin suspension to the other style alot cheaper than hobby shop price.

lol, your not going to believe this. I decided against the muti after I read that post off google. I just read it about 5 seconds ago! Thanks for the heads up. Anyone heard anything about the kyosho?

***I just read the Car Action review and the Monster Trucks truggy rtr shootout and I'm sold on the kyosho. I can't wait to get it! I just have 1 qestion though- should I get any accesories to go with it? Fail safe, glow plugs (says it comes with extras), etc. Thanks***

The Kyosho Pro version is a awesome truggy. The RTR has a lot of cheap crap on it. If you want a truggy and need to go RTR go with the Jammin CRT. RCCA just did a review of the Kyosho and well it's not too impressive. I know a couple guys that run the Kyosho ST-R and it's very impressive though. Maybe consider a used Pro whether it be buggy or truggy. If you go Kyosho depending on where you live, make sure to look at RCBuggyShop.com. Aaron will hook you up!

Thanks! Would it be woth it to splurge the extra 50 bucks on the Jammin truggy or should I get the buggy?

I think I'm gonna go with the Jammin truggy if I can afford it. My budget was 500 bucks, but I'm sure the little bit extra will be worth it.

Are you talking about the Kyosho STR kit? This will set you to about 750 average. After that you will need to spend on the radio...engine...servos...batteries...failsafe..fuel. Just pointing out the realistic view here. Seems you have been on the edge on what to get. Research and list the pros and cons. The mutilator looks only cool to me for the .32 mill

No, the rtr one. I think I'm just gonna go with a jammin. P.S.- Just to see if miricales do happen, I checked e-bay for an str arr on ebay. 800 bucks was the lowest I found.

The K RTR truggy is not very good. None of their Ready Set stuff is very good. Do you NEED a RTR? The kit Zandor showed you is GREAT for the price. If you have been in RC for 4-5 years, it really should not be too big of a deal to build it. If not it would still be cheaper to have the LHS build it than some of the other RTR kits. It is a "older" kit but it still has a great parts supply, and is a tank to start with.

If not the RTR Jammin truggy is a decent deal. The RTR buggy is not as bad as it seems to change it to a FT. You can do it over time and with Ebay.1st thing I would get is the Z brace though, with either the truggy or buggy.
