Hi I got a hpi savage 25. I have stripped 3 first one lasted longer than the rest second one lasted a week and lost engine Nile 3rd one lasted 10 minutes. I'm looking at getting a metal spurgear been looking and looking but can't find a 49 tooth savage 25 one would all savage spur gears fit my savage 25 thanks.

You may want to figure out what your issue is before trying to "fix" it with a metal spur. What's happening to the spurs? Teeth burning off?

Could be a cracked engine mount or just bad alignment. I have a spur that had lasted me 10+ gallons out of my savage. It's dinged up with nicks/cuts in it from rocks and whatnot, but not a single tooth missing.

I agree with olds. I have never been a fan of the metal spur gears. My Savage XL came with a metal spur gear. I ditched it in favor of a plastic one that i have been running on my X for well over a year now. I like the plastic ones because they are lighter and spin up quicker than metal ones. With the proper setup a plastic spur gear will last just as long as a metal one. Like olds said there is a reason for your problem improper gear mesh and engine alignment are the most likley causes. If the engine mount is moving I would suggest loctite on the mount screws and make sure the engine is lined up properly. Could be your engine mount plate is bent or warped.

I to 2nd olds...

also you may want to consider the method in which your setting the mesh. Are you using a dollar bill?

slipper could be set to tight too.

what about running on grass i know when i run on grass burn spur right off. any suggestions!

I run my XL on grass all the time and now have a huge jump that my neighbor and I built. I get enough air to jump clear over my Jeep Cherokee lengthwise been running a the same plastic 49 tooth spur that was on my Savage X and haven't had any problems with it at all. Try loosening the slipper clutch.

I burnt out 8 plastic spur gears before replacing it with a metal one. No problems up to date

Gotta change your clutchbell to a hardened metal if going metal spur or it'll strip your clutch bell. Mine came with metal and I swapped to plastic. Very happy with it now.

i am on the fence on the metal non metal. i just tired of burning gears off. and i followed all the advice i was given. Its just when they went to the xl then put a metal gear on there. hhhmmmmmm

Bigger engine, taller gearing, forces you to run the slipper really tight. At least that's what I've had on my savage with an LRP28S3 in it. The engine will pull 47/17, but the spur slips unless I lock it. Will work for about 5 minutes, then slip. Once it slips, it just keeps slipping. Now I'm running 49/16 I think and it doesn't slip.

Well the only thing i could tell you is it's a matter of personal and financial preference. My XL came with a metal spur and after about a month of running it finally ate the clutchbell up. 16 to 40 dollars for a new clutchbell depending on the brand and where you get it from vs 4 to 8 bucks for a new plastic spur gear. Well you do the math. I'm running a 17 tooth bell and a 49 tooth plastic gear for about 3 months and I run almost everyday bashing really hard on grass and pavement and the plastic gear has held up really well. The only thing I have had to replace is the slipper pads. Maybe you should consider gearing it down a little. With combo I'm running with the Ofna Force .32 engine I have in it I can still pull wheelies all day long. And like I mentioned above I can also jump clear over cars with the ramp I have. I'm very happy with the top speed and acceleration I get.

Iam just running a stock 4.6 savage and i have tighten the factory spur the loosen it a 1/4 turn back and 10 mins in grass i have a smooth gear.

At least you getting a month i am getting 10 mins

Sounds like your not getting the mesh or the alignment quite right. Also loctite on the engine mount bolts works wonders.

i have tried this before with same results. i take a look at it and i will get back to you guys.

Well i fixed the engine bolts. Now it ruins spur gears it runs for about five mins and start to slip and destroys the slipper pad. i tighten the gear down and back it off 1/2 turn and still nothing. would help if i when to a different size gear. i killed 2 spurs today and really frustrated i had this savage for 2 years and i never had it running correctly between the steering issues (i finally fixed it) and the spur gear issues. Very frustrated!!!!!

You are taking the backing off the pad so it actually adheres to the spur right? Some people make that mistake.

For me, I can't run any taller gearing than 16/49 or my slipper slips if I don't lock it down. I run an LRP28 in it. Tried running 16/47, worked fine for about 5 minutes, but once the engine warmed up and starting putting down the power, it would slip when it shifted into second causing a soft shift, then 2 or 3 of those and it slipped constantly. Once a glaze forms on the pad... it's all over.

i awalys peeled the back off. i was told it could be clutch bell
over heating causing the cenyre of the spur to melt. i ordered a 16t clutch bell i going to try that and change the clutch bell shoes and bearings. it will be a racing vented bell
