I Just purchased a used Hpi nitro star G3.0 from friend for dirt cheap. I was able to get the thing to run but it is not tuned yet. The only issue i see with it is that its heatsink is broken; the top couple fins are broken off. Does this make the engine unusable? I don't want to pay for a new heat sink that will run me $30 when the engine new costs $80. Can I run the engine with the broken heatsink without issue?

thanks

here is the heatsink

Cut it off and smooth out any jagged spots, it'll be lighter and more aerodynamic...you should gain a good 10 mph. Seriously though, I'd just cut it off, one little fin won't hurt it. It's the hit that broke that fin that I'd be worried about.

Not a problem at all. I just filed down the edges on my picco .26 max from where the entire top fin broke off. Its been holding on by just two pieces for a while now and a rollover yesterday took it off in one piece. Ran her today for several tanks in 86 degree heat and temps are fine on engine still.
