I got a 49104 last night. It looks as that it might have had 1 tank of fuel ran through it. I see a little red in the bottom of the tank. Other wise it looks new, the tools are not even open. I am new to Nitro so forgive me for asking what may be simple questions. I have know idea if the 2.5 was broken in like the book reads. Should I just redo the break in? If I do and it already was, will it cause any damage? I am giving this truck to my son for X-Mas, so it will be cold. What is the coldest I should run it? I did not get a charger for the easy start, what is the best way to go to get 1?
Thank you for any advise/help.

I would break it in again just for piece of mind, especially since you don't really know where the last guy left off or if he broke it in properly.
This is a perfect time to break in and get some run time, then come Christmas its all dialed in and good to go. As far as outdoor temps go, I've run mine at 40*F, I know there's guys on the forum here who run in cooler temps than that. Just keep in mind you need to run a little richer and plastic parts become a little more brittle.
I'd also recommend some extra glow plugs, batteries and a temp gun to assist you with break in and tuning.

Thanks, as far as glow plugs what do recommend as far as heat range?

Try a medium and hot plug and decide what works best for you. Small blocks (like a 2.5) tend to respond well to hot plugs.
Do you have any pics you can't post or a list of everything supplied with rig?

I'm a traxxas guy and sounds like you scored a good find. I would rebreak the engine in. As far as temperature I run mine when it's 30 outside just have to run a little richer. You can always wrap the motor with a old sock or something to help keep the temps up. The 2.5 loves Byrons 25% fuel 11% oil. As far as a charger I use the onyx 240 AC DC charger that is around $69 on eBay or Amazon. You can use this charger for electric rc cars also if you end up with a few of those as well.Your going to want to order a few extra batteries for the easy start. A rechargeable hump pack for the onboard electronic for the car is a good investment too. You will need a adapter to charge the hump pack with the dynamite charger but it's only like $2-3 bucks. The best plugs to run are OS #8 or traxxas 3232 plugs. The OS plugs in my opinion hold up better than the traxxas plugs. Hope this helps. Welcome to the hobbym

+1 to above advise. I would also say that running the truck in cold weather you may also want to get in the snow, spin around on the ice and make sure that the snowbanks are good and solid, a few good jumps off of them will do that. You may also want to get some good video of it. Always fun to watch. And lastly you will absolutely have to have some hot chocolate for you and your son to enjoy afterwards. Sounds like a great find, you will have lots of fun with it and parts are so readily available that even when (not if) you break something you can fix it quickly and afordably to have it running again. Shaun

Thanks for all the help. I emailed the person I got this from and he said that he never even started the truck. Here are some pics of what I got.
Thanks again

Wow!! If you don't mind me asking what did you pay for it? Also it looks like he has upgraded it to the 3.3 engine. Much much better than the 2.5. Just fyi that's a lot of truck for a kid. With the 3.3 motor your looking at upper 45+ mph. I actually clocked mine at 52mph with the 3.3. I love my Maxx prob my favorite truck. I'm a sucker for the two speed transmission. I guess that's why I have a maxx, revo and jato. :thumbs-up::thumbs-up:

I see that the onboard batt has a charge port, is there a batt and wire harness that work? What is a good brand of hump batt?

That truck is immaculate. Congratulations on a very nice score!
Nothing to be concerned with but, I believe what you have is a late model 4910 (not a 49104) with some early edition suspension parts,
a.k.a a Franken-Maxx. The body graphics, grey parts ,chassis plate and AM radio all match closest to 2008-2010 model years.
The black shocks, black bulk heads, and round body posts and rims appear to be model year 2005 or older.
If you need to replace suspension parts, look for grey (post 2005). The black parts have been superseded and getting tough to find.
These pics are examples of older model black plastic suspension parts.

The 49104 model is basically the same as the 2008 4910 except the 49104 has the TQ 2.4ghz transmitter and receiver.
This the manual and parts lists I would recommend for your truck. It has instructions for the TQ3 AM radio.

For curiosity sake, does your differential cases have 2 or 4 screws holding the halves together?

that engine aint a 3.3 ,its either a 2.5r or a 2.5 with a r head on it .either way its gonna be a bit better than a stock 2.5 ,nice score by the way!!

You got me thinking so I went and looked again, the block has 2.5 cast into it so as far as I know that is what it is. I thing I got a good deal, I gave $200 shipped to the door of E-bay.

Nitrotrout, you really have me wondering what I have. The owners manual that came with it says 49104, so that is what I was going with. As far as I can tell there are 2 screws on the diffs. Thank you for all the links, I will try to sort this out.

Nothing to be concerned with, you got a sweet deal on a sweet looking truck.
Blue cooling head on a 2.5 usually means it's a 2.5R, which is a step up from the standard 2.5.
49104 owners manual will work fine, the only difference between 4910/ 49104 is the radios.
If you need help adjusting your TQ3 radio refer to the 2008 or older manuals

2 screw diff cases such as this are 2005 and older

My bad it looked like a 3.3 head. Great score for $200 shipped. I will give $250 and pay for shipping if your interested in selling. :)

Bama thanks for the offer but I have to give this a try. I think my son and I will have fun next summer. Thanks for the link.

Cool man I completely understand I'm addicted to nitro rc. If you do want to sell it though please let me know I'm always interested in a good maxx for sale.

Is the TQ3 radio as good as the TQ2.4? Are the 2 screw Diff any good, is it worth changing them out?

Before you invest in upgrades try the truck out and decide if this is a hobby you'd like to get into. Then If you decide it's not for you, at least you're not into it too deep and you can probably get fully reimbursed on your investment.

If you decide to keep your truck , a transmitter upgrade would be a good improvement to start with.
The TQ3 AM is prone to runaways from outside frequency interference and with the introduction of 2.4 ghz transmitters they've become obsolete.
That is one upgrade I'd recommend sooner than later. The Flysky 2.4 transmitters are good, and the prices are real reasonable. Might be worth looking into.

or the Traxxas TQ

The 4 screw diffs are an improvement over the grease filled 2 screw diffs. The 4 screw diff cases reduce flexing for better gear alignment
and the diffs themselves are sealed allowing you to tune them with different diff oil viscosities.
I doubt you're gonna blow out your diffs with a 2.5R so, I'd postpone this upgrade until they actually fail on you.
Instead, I'd upgrade the throttle and steering servos, and swap out the 4 AA batteries for a rechargeable hump back battery

I would swap out the bushings in the steering bell crank for some good bearings.CVD's are also a good upgrade, the stock drive shafts are ok, however I have twizlered a few. Just my $0.02 worth, Shaun
