I'm was trying to break my new os .18tm today and I'm using 30% trinity monster fuel. It seems that this engine either doesn't like trinity fuel or it doesn't like 30% nitro content. after I fixed the High idling problem the engine was still running temps of 220-240. that seemed to high for break in. I richened the high speed and the low speed and still ran 220-240. I richened a little bit more and still running 220-240. I have no experience with any other motor other than the traxxas 2.5. do these symtoms seem normal? should I be using 20% fuel? PLEASE HELP!!!

I would think that as long as you have plenty of oil comming out of the exhaust, and aren't going crazy driving with it you should be ok, its ok to get the temps up because this will allow the piston and sleve to get their proper mesh and expansion and such, so that you are not doing too much damage

With a new engine, those temps are fine for break in. All of the parts are a little tight, making more friction, making the temps go up some. You should be fine, unless you need another shim for the head, since you are running 30%.

what are the manufacters suggested operating temps for this engine? does anyone know?

also what glow plug other than the os lc3 plug could you use with this engine? would a McCoy mc-8 plug work fine with this engine?

I'm runnin' an OS A5 plug with Sidewinder 30% in my Revo with an OS .18TM. My temps are always around 240 when tuned for good top end and good bottom end. Have you checked for an air leak in your fuel system? Richening your needles should make some impact.

My OS 18TM has never ran hotter than 190 degrees. I love it!

LS that's not good either...you should get it over 200 for break in.....and if you want to run rich is fine but you WANT temps at least 200 when running it......you want it to be around 220-250 temps........
Tmaxx, did you just turn the screw and temp it right away or did you run it around for 30 seconds or so before temping it........you need to give the engine time to see the effect your change has on it.......if you are getting temps like that while breaking it in you should probably richen the LSN a hair......especially if you are still doing the low throttle blips still.....OS carbs usually come set really rich on the LSN...I've had RGs that won't start up at factory settings.......did you lean the LSN out at all already????
usually during break in you want ot only use the HSN because you're looking for high RPM temp control from it.......

The manufacturer dosen't have a suggested operating temp they just say don't let it get any hotter than 248 degrees.

yes but you also need to understand what the break in and running process does to the piston / sleeve.....they need a certain amount of heat to expand the sleeve enough so the piston head isn't beating itself into a cone......

Mine was a bitch to start and I ended up adjusting the mid range needle slightly. The one you are not supposed to touch. I don't remember which way I went but did that and it fired up, went through break in and now I run about 240 after a 5 minute heat. A little warmer after 10 minutes.

BTW, LS1, you want to lean that puppy up a little, at that temp I doubt your truck even hits second gear. One of my racing buddies was having a bad day and his truck wouldn't shift or make good power and found him running around 195, leaned it out and bam, back came the power.

It hits second gear, and has tons of power. But i'll try leaning it out and see if I get more performance out of it.

at 190* its like running at 300*, you don't have enough expansion in the sleeve and are going to wear it out quickly. Run it at 220* and you'll get more life out of it. A tad over won't hurt it either.
