So I'm trying to break in my Savage SS that I built and I have many questions...

I'm just letting it idle and the temps get close to 300, is something wrong?? I haven't messed with the carb settings at all.

Sometimes, when it's idling, out of the blue, it will just start revving like crazy. When it does that, I immediately kill it. Is this normal?

TONS of oil is coming out of the exhaust. I'm propping the Savage up on a cardboard box so it's wheels can spin freely when idling. The cardboard box is covered in oil. Is this normal?

When the first tank started to run out, the revs went crazy again. I assume from leaning out. Is this normal? I killed it as soon as that happened, but am I suppose to just let it die on its own?

If you are hitting 300 at idle (or anytime) something is wrong. Have you tried richening the LSN?

The oil on the box is normal. If it revvs up without throttle that makes me think it is lean again. The savage tank as a problem that when it gets low it leans out the mixture making it revv up. Any nitro engine will revv up at the very end of a tank, but the savage tank does it slightly after about 1/2 tank.

Start it again and richen the LSN and see if the temps start to go down. if not you may have a air leak. First try if richening it helps any and get back to us.

Sometimes, when it's idling, out of the blue, it will just start revving like crazy. When it does that, I immediately kill it. Is this normal? No, it's not, UNLESS the tank is empty. If it starts revving up with a full tank, sounds like an air leak. Try putting RTV sealant around the carb. throat and back plate and check your fuel lines. Also, make sure the tank O-ring is in good shape and not cracked.

Like AC mentions, the Savage will lean out on its own after half tank, due to its design. What I did was put about an 8 inch pressure line from the tank to the muffler to help keep the pressure up. Others bring it in and richen the HSN a tad at about half tank to compensate. If the tank is actually empty, I just let it go to make sure it burns as much up as possible. You don't want to keep fuel in the tank when you're storing it.
 
300 is way high. I wouldn't break it in on a stand. (or box in your case) When i break one in, I run it so rich that it's blubbering and will run steady, but not punchy at all. It should take a second or two to move when you hit the gas.

190 - 220 is optimal.

Actually 190 is not hot enough for a proper break in. You want to really be 205-215 range. Also idling through a break in is not really good at all. You need to vary the engine rpms, and the temps must be in the low 200s to properly break it in. You would be much better off to put the truck on the ground like a big parking lot, and run it in very large figure 8s, easing on the throttle and then off again, keeping the temps in the low 200s. And always let the engine cool off with the piston at bdc, you dont want it to cool down with the piston pinched at the top of the sleeve.

Beason helped me figure out the problem. The idle setting was waaaaay too high for some reason. I fixed that, as well as richened up the HSN, then it ran a very cold 130 - 150 at idle. I did that for half a tank, then ran her in circles for another half tank, then leaned her out for a half tank, then leaned out more for another half tank, etc.

I was bad though. She was so rich that she'd get stuck in tall grass sometimes (too rich, no power)...and my lazy ass would go WOT to try to get her outta it. Oh well, she seems to be running fine now. I went to a local offroad track for the first time this weekend, and got TONS of help from a bunch of people there.
