I just bought a savage xl and went to get it tuned and it will not shift into second and doesn't have its full power in first. It is 25 degrees where i am at and i do have a hot plug. They have tried to run it as hot as possible and when they do it just kills the motor like its not getting enough fuel. ?The hottest they can get it to run is 180 degrees and then that gives it no power whatsoever. It bogs in first and will not shift into second at all. We have tried to tune it every way possible (even guys who have ran nitro cars for 25 years). ?I was told to come on here and ask if a super hot plug would make a difference and also what kind of turns do i need to put on the low and high end? and yes it is broke in. I have ran atleast 5 tanks through it. 20% odonnell fuel

please help and thank you

If you broke it in in the cold, it may be damaged. If your leaning it to bring the temps up, it probably is damaged. Running nitro in the cold is very stressful to the engine internals. Richen it up and cover some of the fins on the head with tin foil or something else that won't melt. Get it to where it runs at about 220-240 while blowing good smoke.

I mean these guys are pros themselves and actually race so they know what theyre doing but they said they have never seen anything like it.. u can place your hand on the motor and its not even hot and if u try to raise the temp then it just quits... will a super hot plug be any better than a hot plug? and how many turns should i use for the low end and the high end? thanks

You have to cover the head some to retain some heat when it's below 45 degrees outside. Those pros should know that leaning an engine starves it of lubrication, no matter how hot or not hot the head is. Now quit arguing and take my advise if you want to have half a chance of getting that engine running right.;) Don't worry about the glow plug until you get the temps up the right way. Set the needle back to factory settings(your manual will list them), cover half the head with 2 layers of tin foil. Tune it from there to run right, and if it's getting too hot, expose a couple of the covered fins.

thanks man i hope this guy agrees with you.. i dont understand why a brand new truck wants to run so bad.. i wont even pull the wheels at all.. i was watching a youtube video of one after a first tune and that thing was a wheelie machine.

Because it's cold out. Nitro engine+cold weather = engine don't run right. You'll probably need to rebuild it once the temp gets above 60 degrees.

at least wait when its above 45*f ..then wrap the head with foil..the guys doin it for u should know better not to break in when its cold..i broke in an engine around 40degrees and i have sock or foil on the engine head to cover it.
