bought a 5b today with pics

found a decent deal on craigslist for a slightly upgraded hpi buggy. has a purple aluminum chassis. (dont know if its stock). I'm assuming its a 29cc motor. set of stock wheels and tires, pair of paddles on wheels, pair of mud tires on wheels, small tool box with spare parts, rpm front and rear control arms, integy 52t steel spur gear, new clutch in tool box, set of t handle alan wrenches, screwdrivers, spare wheel nuts, spare drive flanges for the outer part of the axles, spare axles, aluminum turn buckles front, fm futaba controler. runs very well. paid 400.00 for it. sound like a good deal? ill post a pic in a few minutes when i get it downloaded

can anyone identify the pipe its got on it? also is there anyway to tell what motor is on it. i dont want to assume that its a 29cc when its a 26cc or vise versa

That looks like the stock SS style pipe. I would get another airfilter for it though unless you will never be around any dust. I only like K&N for 1:1 scale cars. But over all I would say for sure worth the $400 you paid. I am thinking it is the version 1 Baja guessing by the purple anno on it. So unless it was upgraded it might even be the 23cc.

It looks like an original Baja 5b RTR. I'm with Joey on getting a better filter on it and suggest an Outerwares cover for it. You also want to get a cover for the pinion and spur to rocks and garbage out of them.

I have the cover for the spur. I was trying to replace the clutch but have 3 bolts that are being a pain. I have a cover for the air filter also but I need one for the recoil.

Dave's Discount Motors (ddm.com) has the covers for sale. I've got them on my Baja.

thanks for the info guys. took it out today and abused it for a good 2 hours on a tank of fuel. batteries died in the car as i ran out of gas. does fly well but lands a bit funky.

what are your guys thoughts on the enclosed recoil and the enclosed clutch system?

If you're getting 2 hours on a tank of fuel that engine is set severly lean. A full tank should last around 45 to 60 minutes. You can go to hpi.com to see what the settings should be.

got some good information from my LHS. told me i have for sure a 1st gen ss 5b. velocity stack from ddm, also a short ddm air filter. i have a few issues that i need to fix but money fixes everything. motor was running a bit lean. tuned and running like a top

Looks like a good winter project! If it didn't come with a manual get one off ebay for about $10, it breaks down the entire vehicle to every single nut and bolt with all the part numbers and everything. I would go through that motor as it looks like you have a leaky cylinder gasket., put about a $1000 in it and you can have yourself a pretty much pimped out brand new baja! Great deal for $400, congrats ;-)
