So I got tired of bending the shock shafts on the stock shocks of the TMAXX. I went all out and got the traxxas big bore aluminium shocks with the super duper shafts. BUT, after my install I noticed that basically you can push the tmaxx down and is slowly if at all comes back up. Is this the springs or did I jack up putting the oil in? If it's the springs can I just put the stock tmaxx springs on to help with the suspension?

You can try stock springs. Many went with some trinity heavy springs back in the day. I thought the big bore springs were the same as the stock springs in compression strength. Too soft.

Send RC Raven an email and see if these springs fit the big bores:

They mention that they are stiffer, but not by how much.

2.5lbs compression rate.

The diameter on tower for these looks like they would fit and they are rated at 2.9lbs (16% stiffer):

Alright guys I need some clarification. It seems like if someone knows how a shock works they can answer this question. Is the spring causing the lack of rebound or is it the fact that I'm using 30 wt. oil? Again it just slowly raises if at all when pressed down. Thanks.

I think I've figured it out... with a couple of spacers on each shock they seem to rebound faster.... so I'm assuming my oil is fine but I need stiffer shocks..... correct? Thanks!
 
Stiffer springs, but yes. 30 weight is a bit on the light side. Ok for general bashing, but 40 weight would handle bigger air better. Springs hold a truck up, but the oil is what keeps it from slapping the chassis against the ground off a jump. Heavier oil usually requires stiffer springs to get the rebound to be quicker. 30 is not heavy. It's odd that the springs for the big bores are the springs for the e-maxx... guessing it would be lighter than a t-maxx so it would require softer springs to keep it plush.
 
And that emaxx fact would explain the softer than stock springs for my tmaxx....thanks man.....firmer springs it is and prob 40 wt oil
 
Ok so I'm an idiot... Those springs were just fine. I forgot that when I bought the truck (and swapped the shocks) that it had the spacers in. Hence stiffer "springs", more rebound, higher stance. Spacers in.... back to the original setup. I still think I'd like to get stiffer springs long term though and maybe lose the spacers.
 
I used savage springs and 70wt on mine it's nice and stiff yet rebounds quite well best part is the shocks are hard enough tht they don't squat when I nail it trying to do wheelies
 
The shock setup is the one part of the truck that has the most adjustments. You can change where the shocks mount, both on the tower and on the A-arm, and there are countless changes you can make with different weight oils, springs and pre-load spacers.
