Big Bore or Pro-Series?

Hey Guys,

I am looking at buying a set of shocks for the Slash. Problem is... which shocks should I buy? According to Traxxas they have a set of Big Bore for $25 a pair and then a set of Pro-series shocks for $20. Now Traxxas says that the only difference is a slight body diameter difference.. and a bit over $10 a set price difference. Which ones would you guys recomend? I was leaning toward the Pro-Series for a bit less money. For the Slash... I can't see it making a huge difference. Thanks

The stock shocks hold up well, the only upgrade I see the racers doing is getting the aluminum shock caps.

That's Cool. I didn't know how well the plastic units would hold. I figured if I upgraded the caps I might as well go all aluminum. I am guessing you just upgraded the caps? Thanks man!

Aluminum shock caps on the stockers is indeed the way to go. You can also add Ti Nitride coated shafts to them.

If you want to upgrade to aluminum, the pro series is pretty much a direct size replacement and the big bores mean just that, bigger diameter shock bodies. Neither one come with Ti Nitride coated shafts.

Have you guys done anything other than replace the caps?

Like Rob, I replaced one of my shock shafts with ti-nitride when it bent. Other than that, I changed the stock oil to 70wt in front, 40 wt rear. 1 Hole piston in front, and kept the stock 2 hole piston in rear. This is the shock set-up most guys at our local track run and it works well.

I haven't made the move to aluminum caps yet but it's the most common upgrade.

Also, you will want to check your local track rules on what can and cannot be modifed on your Slash if you decide to race the spec class. In general, the shock cap upgrade is allowed but all aluminum shocks are not.

FYI, if you haven't done so already, you may want to upgrade the gear cover to RPM's. The stocker has that slot in it on the bottom that will allows dirt in.

Well, since my LHS which was also my local track just closed... I am guessing there won't be a spec class next season as was discussed.

.... on the bright side though, the track in my back yard will not have any rules according to the owner! LOL

Seriously though thanks for the advice. There is rumor of a track opening up about 40 minutes from me for next season and there might be a spec class there I can run. I hope anyway. I will save the stock caps, just in case.

I went with the big-bores and to tell you the truth I saw a little difference on the big jumps but not much otherwise.

My RPM cover is on the way!

They can still come apart but you won't have to worry about the plastic breaking on the stock caps...

big bores are the way too go for sure. you can find them on ebay alot cheaper then most hobby shops. also if you do use the stock shocks, its not recomended to go past 45wt oil because its to thick and will slow down the rebound and will also pop off the shock caps easier. another thing to do is use teflon tape on the threads before intalling the caps.

Thanks for the info Robmob, I apreciate it. XRC did a write up on the Slash, and the gear cover and shock caps were on the top of the priority list. That and replacing the stock wheel nuts. I guess I should have read my XRC sooner. At least I would not have bothered you guys with dumb questions. LOL

I have ordered the shock caps and the RPM gear cover. I went ahead and ordered RPM Arms, front and rear, and shock towers as well.
